Carol QuertierA COUPLE’S new fire alarm proved its worth almost immediately in preventing a potential major incident at their St Martin’s home.

Carol Quertier (pictured) returned home on Friday night and turned on the washing machine but, as it had developed a fault, decided to wait until it had finished its cycle rather than go straight to bed.

‘I heard a strange noise and realised it was our new fire alarm,’ she said.

‘The smell was coming from the washing machine in the kitchen, which was flashing so I turned it off at the mains and called the fire brigade.’

Firefighters arrived and pulled the machine away from the wall and moved it into the Quertiers’ back garden.

    Quite honestly I cannot but wonder why it isn’t compulsory to have Fire alarms.

    I lived in a place once where it was compulsory, and was checked once a year and batteries changed free of charge.

    If no alarm Insurance was doubled until alarm is fitted.

    A firm of some renown offered to install alarm at cost price, no charge for fixing.

    Islander – it is in any new build.

    But there again so is electricity socket access for midgets, blast walls for your oil tank and soakaways so large you could hold flower shows in them.

    Well Gilthead;
    I mentioned battery driven smoke and fire alarms.

    The use of Battery was a thought, because if an electrical fire started and blew the fuses. there is no alarm, but a battery will give alarm

    Oh I’m not querying your statement, I thought it good.

    I only thought that in a modern world, sometimes old fashioned things do have their uses.

    Why my old Ford T has just had electric horn fitted
