More UK clothing retailers are coming to Town
Wednesday 15th June 2011, 2:30PM BST.
TWO UK clothing retailers will be opening stores in Town over the next nine months, Sandpiper chief executive Tony O’Neill has revealed.
The first will open in Le Pollet in either September or October, while the second, which Mr O’Neill has described as a ‘very major UK brand’, is looking at a January or February opening.
Mr O’Neill (pictured) could not disclose the names of the retailers, but said it was a further demonstration of Sandpiper’s commitment to St Peter Port.
‘The business is performing really well, especially on the retail front, and if you look at the town centre we are the company that is investing the most locally with the openings of Costa, Hotel Chocolat and Pasty Presto.’

Oh yay, Another ‘well known UK brand’ that the rest of us will never have heard of.
At least it’s not another coffee shop though…
Perhaps we can afford something in this shop? I draw the line paying upwards of £15 for bars of chocolate and £25 for a burger.

I may have this wrong, but the impression I get from this article is that Sandpiper is the business that is doing really well on the retail front, investing locally with Costa, Hotel Chocolat and Pasty Presto, backed up by the phrase ‘further demonstration of Sandpiper’s commitment to St Peter Port’……. These are all franchises held by Sandpiper…..this leads me to believe that major UK retailers are NOT coming to Guernsey, rather that they are allowing Sandpiper to set up a local franchise in Guernsey at no risk to themselves. The difference being that we most likely will not be able to use UK store gift vouchers within the shops here (as is the case with Early Learning Centre in Checkers and Iceland in St Martins) and any promotions here (buy nine coffees at Costa in Channel Islands and get tenth free) are not valid at UK branches! As grateful as I am for the diversity and increased choice that we will get, I would rather see these UK stores own and operate a proper store in the Island so that we benefit fully from the increased diversity!

Gosh, people do moan!

@Dadude ~ The fact is that these UK stores will not set up here because it’s simply not a large enough catchment, so we should be pleased that others are bringing the franchises here which gives some variety at least – even if we don’t get the freebies! When will people realise that Guernsey in entirety is the size of a modest mainland town.
