‘Room exists for improvement in relationship with Guernsey’

stuart troughtALDERNEY’S new States President thinks the island’s relationship with Guernsey could be improved.

Stuart Trought, 60 (pictured), was elected on Saturday and will be sworn in as Sir Norman Browse’s successor next week.

In his first in-depth interview since the poll – where he defeated Bill Simpson and Paul Arditti – Mr Trought talked extensively about strengthening Alderney’s ties with France and reviewing its links with Guernsey.

Mr Trought said: ‘I do not want to see Alderney disadvantaged in any inter-island relationship. I think Alderney is getting a deal from Guernsey that was set up in 1948.’

    I think getting on with neighbours is great but Alderney should be its own man with policy. Jersey and Guernsey are following the broken UK paradigm we need to think out of the box.

    As a one-time Alderney representative in the States of Guernsey, I always found the attitude of the people of Guernsey very welcoming. One or two prominent politicians were somewhat difficult towards us but even the States usually gave us a fair hearing most of the time. The begging bowl aspect was a difficult position we had been lumbered with but with the advent of some income being generated in Alderney – long may it last – our independence has thrived.
