Sex offenders’ register is welcomed by campaigners
Saturday 18th June 2011, 2:29PM BST.
VICTIMS of sexual abuse will take comfort from a new sex offenders register, campaigners have said.
Hairstylist Maria Crawford, 46 (pictured), launched a petition in 2007 to call for a sexual offenders’ register and to name and shame lawbreakers, which was signed by more than 300 islanders.
She said she was delighted offenders would have to notify authorities with key information about their movements, if the States backed the Home Department’s proposals next month.
‘It’s good that something is finally being done after such a long time,’ she said.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
It is a good think this is coming to light but I still think that it should not be made public.
But im sure the police already know where they are living etc

Sarah, would you not like to know if say your new neighbour was a known sex offender ? dont you think you and the people around you should be informed… especially if children are living in the area ?, I think people have a right to know !.

I know what you are saying and yes and no. I think as long as they where not working with children or looking at my children or other children then I would not want to know.Im sure we walk past a few in everyday life. I just think if we knew who they were and where they lived then it may cause trouble. You never know these people my have girlfriends or wifes now and have turned over a leaf.I think as long as the police know where they life and work I think it’s ok. Don’t get me wrong what they have done it bad but as long as they do not re affend.

I agree with Sarah on this one.
Too much risk for vigilante retaliation and even if some people are deserving of that we live in a community that abides by a set of laws. It is not our position to take the law into our own hands.
Mistakes would be made which would be very difficult to take back.
Agree with full disclosure for people working with children/vulnerable adults but a sex register shouldn’t negate the need for good parenting/being safe.
This is an emotive subject and it won’t be long before we get the “they’re all disgusting and should be castrated” comments, however, if we look at this objectively (difficult I know) then I fail to see who this protects exactly and instead would install an island wide panic that Joe Bloggs of 41 Les Banques was charged with indecent exposure 5 years ago.
After all there’s nothing in place for us to know who potential sex offenders are? What about the ones who are opportunists and perhaps have never been caught?
Would offenders stay on there for life? Or just until their conviction is considered spent?
It would only cause problems and acts of vigilantism.
