Post cut rounds from today to save money

Monday 20th June 2011, 11:30AM BST.

Postmen on their bikesSOME islanders will have to wait longer for postal deliveries from today because just under one round in six is being cut to save money.

But Guernsey Post has promised that all mail will still be delivered by 1pm.

From the 20th there will be 10 fewer postal rounds, which means that the remaining ones are now longer.

The States-owned utility said it was unable to provide a breakdown of which areas would receive their post later than before.

The changes are part of Guernsey Post’s efforts to cut its costs by £3m.

I don’t know if anybody else has noticed but over the last week the mail delivery is not what it should be.

Our buisness post has been few and far between when we usually get a big bundle each day plus we posted a cheque locally which has taken 2 weeks to get to it’s destination!

Blue – there have been no changes to collection, sorting, delivery of local mail other than, from today, the time it takes to deliver. All mail into the PO will have been sorted and delivered as normal.

The cheque taking 2 weeks must be an exception (possible delivery error?) as there is certainly never a bundle of local mail left waiting to be sorted for more than a day, no matter two weeks!

If you are referring to UK mail then that’s different as there seems to have been some Royal Mail delays for many months now.

I should add, the UK mail comment relates to what happens on the other side of the channel. When it comes to the local PO, nothing is left for more than two days depending on class of mail. Again, nothing will wait two weeks to be sorted and delivered!

    Dear ‘Blue’,

I hope I can reassure you a little by confirming that our mail deliveries are completely up-to-date. Last Monday the mail failed to arrive in the Island due to fog, but even then everything was clear by the Tuesday.

The operational changes to which this article refers commenced today so would not have had an impact.

I appreciate this does not answer your specific issues but if you would like to contact me directly I would be happy to investigate further. Tel 726241.

Out post has been worse recently too. Suspiciously frequent days when we receive no post, not sure about today since we virtually never get post on a Monday anyway.

Seems to me Mr Postman that it would be better to have no deliveries on a Monday if you need to cut delivery days rather than the proposed Saturday.

As Beanjar says, very often we get no mail on a Monday at all. I suppose this may be because most mail is local (parcels excluded) and mail posted by local businesses on a Friday gets delivered on Saturday. There would only be a limited amount of local mail posted over the weekend available to be delivered on the Monday.

As an additional feature, maybe our post could be collected from the PO on any ‘non delivery day’?
