RESIDENTS of a neighbourhood plagued by fly-tipping have welcomed news that CCTV is to be installed to try to stop it.
The St Peter Port constables and douzaine are to install CCTV in fly-tipping hotspots. Les Petites Fontaines will be the first place to have cameras installed. Others including Clifton Steps will be considered in the future.
‘The jewel in the crown of Guernsey is being blighted by inconsiderate individuals and we, with the help of you all, intend to stop it,’ senior constable Barry Cash said.
‘These illegal acts are carried out by the very small minority and we will seek the prosecution of all offenders. We have a duty, in conjunction with Public Services, to keep our Town as clean as we can.’

I hope they get a huge fine for any litter as well enough to pay for the camera .i am sick of seeing litter all over the town including cigarette ends this is also litter .instant fines from the police would help ,they only need to fine a few each you until others get the message.then we might all enjoy the beauty the parish has to offer!

kat. I quite agree. The fag butts really get on my nerves. It always seems to get over looked and people just seem to think chucking away cigarette ends doesn’t count as litter.

Me too. Cigarette butts are everywhere you look these days ever since the smoking ban came in. It’s disgusting. Our once lovely, clean Town centre is now blighted by cigarette butts all over the place. Doesn’t look good to the tourists. I wonder how many are put off by our filthy streets and don’t revisit our otherwise beautiful island?
Here’s a suggestion. Why not get those on Community Service out on the streets picking them up? I remember the days when we had litter pickers in Town and the streets were far cleaner.

There are already CCTV cameras overlooking the North Beach car park and it doesn’t seem to stop the Kevs which gather every night throwing their fast food rubbish and assorted other garbage around despite there being plenty of bins in the vicinity. Until the police start enforcing the law nothing is going to change. I applaud the efforts of the town douzaine to try and clean up St.Peter Port, the worst offenders are definitely the restaurants from behind the Tourist Office and opposite the Weighbridge who leave out food scraps in black plastic sacks which are split open by assorted vermin.Fast food outlets are another major source of litter and these businesses should all be charged accordingly.

Perhaps the discarded chewing gum mess could be included when dealing with the cigarette butts problem.
