NatWest Island Games day five – update

Thursday 30th June 2011, 9:33PM BST.

GUERNSEY’S swimmers have claimed eight medals on the final night in the Medina Leisure Centre pool.

Leading the way once more were Kristina Neves and Ian Powell, who both claimed a gold apiece in new record times.

Neves was first to strike, clocking 2-17.58 in the 200m butterfly and later she was to add an individual bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Powell’s success came in the 100m backstroke, in which he broke the Games twice in two days, beating his time from the relay a night earlier with a time of 54.33. In the same race, Tom Hollingsworth claimed a bronze and later he was to win silver in  the 200m breaststroke, beaten only by record-breaker Pal Joensen.

There was an impressive silver, too, for Matt Girard in the 50m free, as well as the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team.

The remaining bronze was won by the women’s 4x100m medley relay team.

Meanwhile, Tom Druce was just 0.01sec. outside Dale Garland’s Games record as he won 400m gold in convincing style at the Fairway athletics track.

  • GUERNSEY are in tomorrow’s football final in the NatWest Island Games.

Goals from Dom Heaume, Glyn Dyer (penalty) and Ross Allen secured the Greens a hard-fought 3-2 win over Aland, for who Lundberg scored twice but who also had Snickars sent off late on for two yellow cards.

Guernsey will now face hosts the Isle of Wight for the gold medal at 3pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in badminton, Paul Le Tocq and Sarah Garbutt are through to the mixed doubles semi-finals having beaten Clague and Li of the Isle of Man in straight sets.

In squash, Natalie Dodd and Gemma Coquelin took silver in the women’s doubles.

There has also been a silver for the women’s cycling time trial team, with Karina Bowie taking individual bronze and Ann Bowditch fifth.

  • A ROSS ALLEN goal has put Guernsey 3-2 up against Aland in the football semi-final approaching full-time.

Jersey, meanwhile, lost their semi-final 1-0 to the Isle of Wight.

  • WITH just under 20 minutes to go, Guernsey and Aland are level at 2-2 in the football semi-final.

Glyn Dyer put Guernsey 2-1 ahead with a penalty early in the second half, but Lundberg has scored his second for Aland to equalise.

In the other semi, Jersey were losing 1-0 to the Isle of Wight heading into injury time.

  • GUERNSEY archers have won a fantastic team gold in the compound head-to-head.

The Sarnians beat a very strong Faroe Islands team by the narrowest of margins, 211-210, in the final at Newclose Cricket Ground on the Isle of Wight.

Meanwhile, it is still 1-1 between Guernsey and Aland in the football semi-final, which has reached half-time.

  • AFTER half-an-hour, Guernsey and Aland are locked at 1-1 in their football semi-final.

The Alanders opened the scoring from the penalty spot but Guernsey drew level thanks to a Dom Heaume header.

The main team news is that Ross Allen has been named on the Guernsey bench.

  • GUERNSEY will have 13 finalists at tonight’s last session of swimming in the 14th NatWest Island Games.

Kristina Neves and Tom Hollingsworth have reached two individual finals apiece, while Ian Powell, the Parfit sisters Lotte and Victoria, Matt Girard, Ben Lowndes and Josh Lewis will feature in one each.

Guernsey will also be represented in the women’s 4x100m medley, the men’s 4x100m freestyle and the mixed 8x50m freestyle relay finals.

Elsewhere, the pairings of Garry Dodd/Alice Loveridge and Olly Langlois/Dawn Morgan have topped their groups in the table tennis mixed doubles while in the badminton equivalent, Paul Le Tocq and Sarah Garbutt are through to the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Rob West and Chantelle Frith are  in the tennis mixed doubles semi-finals.

  • THERE is a big day ahead for Team Guernsey in the Isle of Wight, especially with two big semi-finals taking place.

The women’s basketball team are looking to reach successive Games finals when they meet Gibraltar this morning at Medina Leisure Centre, while this afternoon the men’s football team play Aland for a place in tomorrow’s final.

There is plenty of medal-deciding action elsewhere, too, with it being the last day of the archery and swimming programmes, while Tom Druce is Guernsey’s big hope for gold at the Fairway athletics track today in the 400m.
