States votes to abolish forced heirship law

ISLANDERS will have greater power to leave property and assets to whom they wish after new inheritance legislation was approved by the States.
Deputies yesterday voted 28 to 17 in favour of proposals made by the Inheritance Law Review Committee to abolish forced heirship.
During the debate members questioned whether the legal profession had been effectively consulted after a group of leading advocates raised concerns about the risk and uncertainty created by giving courts the power to change someone’s will.
But Inheritance Committee chairwoman Deputy Mary Lowe (pictured) dismissed the accusation.
