Choosing the airport contractor ‘will be a fait accompli’ when it goes to Assembly
Monday 11th July 2011, 11:30AM BST.

THE STATES will be presented with a fait accompli when it has to decide whether to approve the airport development’s preferred contractor, according to the Housing minister.
Deputy Dave Jones (pictured) was speaking on the BBC Phone-in and expressed his concerns about the number of local contractors that would be used as part of the overall project.
He said he had tried to raise the issue with the Policy Council but had been told he could not question it there.
‘I’m forced now to wait until it comes to the States.’
At that point, he said, it would be a fait accompli because any delay would result in extra costs.

Just goes to prove that no one man, no matter how good, can make any difference to a group intent on having their own way, right or wrong. Roll on the next “Island wide” election. This is the only “democratic” way to choose the right people.

You are like an undernourished Pitbull on a tasty bone usually.
Why let a little set back like this stop you in your tracks?
Quite surprised from reading the above in all honesty. More surprised that you’re almost rolling over & accepting the answers you have been provided with.
It is common knowledge the preferred tender is exceptionally poor value for money.
I would be interested in seeing what a German contractor’s figure would be for the work. A lot less that what’s currently on the table I’d wager.
If you want answers keep up the stance you’re known & well respected for.
Back to that tasty bone.

We can always rely on Rep Jones to shove a sneaky spanner in the works of absolutley everything going on of importance, just before the final meeting of the States, which is at the end of this month – they then break up, until September.
Interestingly though, that he decided his annual ‘fore play’ will be the airport, when there are so many equally vital issues he should be concerned about, wearing his ministers’ hat. Have PC sidelined Rep Jones again? looks like it.

It seems to me that they should have looked at Manchester Airport,, The contractor is doing to work whilst the runways are shut at night and are ready for use for the 1st flight in. all for a pricely sum of £ 21 million Check out the story on BBC News.. Seems Guernsey has got stiffed again.

We need more people like Deputy D Jones in the states.

I’ve been floored by this whole sorry affair. How has Bernard Flouquet managed to get us into this situation again?
I sincerely hope there are more deputies like Dave Jones, who are willing to question any and every aspect of this proposal.
The use (or not, and why?) of local labour is an issue that needs clearing up.
So does the issue of materials transportation and storage.
Since when does agricultural land use fall under the remit of PSD? Has the Environment Department agreed to these proposals? If so, that’ll open up another can of worms, seeing as they’re not exactly accommodating when individual landowners want to farm their vergees.
More than anything, I hope the States members who doubt the suitability of this whole Airport 2040 nonsense will not fall prey to the ‘fait accompli’ notion Dave Jones apparently has.
There can’t be EXTRA COSTS when there haven’t yet been any costs at all. There’s still time.
Who knows – by kicking out the whole idea, we might actually SAVE some money by opting for a cheaper, less grandiose idea – one that caters for only what we actually need.
I live in hope…
