AROUND 700 yachtsmen set sail from Guernsey in Le Tour des Ports race yesterday.

The event has been held annually since 1984 but this was the first time that it had begun in Guernsey.

Organised by the Granville Yacht Club, which is in La Manche, the race covers around 250 miles in total and the sailors will stop at a different port each day.

They will travel to Cherbourg-Octeville, Port Dielette, Barneville-Carteret, Jersey and Chausey before finishing at Granville on Friday.

A delegation from the regional government of La Manche and politicians from Guernsey watched the start.
