‘Dons’ will be a real test
Tuesday 12th July 2011, 2:30PM BST.
AFC WIMBLEDON will be led by one of the original club’s FA Cup heroes as they travel to the island for Guernsey FC’s inaugural match on Saturday.
The Green Lions’ opening friendly is against The Dons at Foote’s Lane at 7.30pm, with the visitors to be coached by reserve team manager Marcus Gayle.
English-born but he represented Jamaica in the 1998 World Cup, Gayle famously scored the goal for the original Wimbledon that knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup in 1997.
He is the only player to have scored for both clubs, having played for the ‘Crazy Gang’ over 200 times and for AFC on a further 29 occasions, after signing in 2007.
Now coaching at AFC, he will bring over a mixture of his reserve and youth sides for the weekend, including seven players who played in last weekend’s 2-0 friendly win over Fulham’s first team.
