Charity tin rattlers welcome, say Waitrose’s retail rivals

OTHER supermarkets have welcomed the presence of charity collectors following Waitrose’s decision not to allow them on its premises.

Alliance, the Co-op and Marks & Spencer did not wish to comment on Waitrose’s decision but encouraged charities to use their premises.

‘We have about 30 days a year when we have people outside collecting and we will continue to support them,’ said Alliance finance director Rachel Chandler.

‘Supermarkets are key locations that provide great opportunities to collect because so many people pass in and out of the store with spare change.’
