I’m no hero, says hotel manager who saved a life

Saturday 16th July 2011, 2:30PM BST.

Paul GregoryHOTEL assistant manager Paul Gregory saved a guest’s life after the visitor had a seizure while eating lunch.

But the La Piette Hotel worker played down his actions, saying his first-aid training kicked in when the man stopped breathing after choking on a piece of scampi.

‘Hero is a bit heavy,’ the 43-year-old said. ‘People fighting in Afghanistan are real heroes. I just gave him first aid to get him breathing.’

Mr Gregory (pictured), who has lived in Guernsey for 12 years but worked at La Piette for only about four months, saved the UK businessman’s life after the seizure took hold and food became lodged in his throat.

    Term

I agree with Paul Gregory. Hero is a term banded around way too much these days. He was just doing his job – successfully I might add.

Blah: I’m sorry I haven’t read the report on this, but where does it say that his boss didn’t feel that his achievement was worthy of notice? I haven’t read this report so I’d like to know. thanks

bill – maybe i am wrong, but i seem to recall that mr gregory’s boss did not want to give his/her name to the press when asked by the press for an opinion on mr gregory’s actions. i felt that was a strange, rather back-handed endorsement. i would surely be proud to be NAMED as an associate of mr gregory given what he did, whether i was his boss or his pet cat, wouldn’t anyone? maybe the boss has had a problem with scampi on the menu in a previous life.

Agreed. My first thought was that he might have had a Housing licence issue or something of that nature but perhaps it’s kinder to think that he did not wish to take away any of the deserved sunlight shining on Mr Gregory

I agree with John @Term how can you say he was doing his job he is not a doctor. Ok some of us do train in First Aid in our work place but to but putting it into action is a different think. Well done Paul.
