Dating agency says ‘no’ to mum of 14
Monday 18th July 2011, 2:30PM BST.
MOTHER of 14 Joanne Watson told a national newspaper of her disgust at being rejected by a local dating agency.
But Emma Cunningham, the founder of Guernsey Dinner Dating, said she was not comfortable accepting Miss Watson’s joining fee as it came from the taxpayer.
Miss Watson told the Daily Mail she had contacted the service asking to register and was asked about her circumstances, including her employment status and how many children she had.
Miss Cunningham (pictured) said Guernsey Dinner Dating was an exclusive service that was not suitable for everyone.
‘Miss Watson isn’t the first person to be turned down and she won’t be the last,’ she said.

Emma, well done for standing up for what you believe in – a decision which a large proportion of the public would probably agree with. I only hope the ‘I know my rights’ brigade don’t give you a hard time for it.

well done emma! the last thing the island needs is more children from this woman and her possibly unsuspecting bed mates.
this is no slight on her children as not all of them will follow in their parents footsteps and it it a shame to tar them with the same brush when they have had no choice of the parents they are born to.
so many loving couples with respectable lifestyles and modest earnings can’t afford another child, yet this women is a states funded, permatanned babymaking machine.
i’m utterly gobsmacked that she contacted the press with this devastatingly embarrassing admittance for YET ANOTHER 5 minutes of fame! no shame.

You wouldn’t want to risk a date, you would hold her hand and she would be pregnant!

£250 for the year on dating and then paying for meals out she must have so much of our money it’s crazy. I do hope she does find someone but when she does it will be only to make babies she should not be allowed to have anymore children.
I wonder what the father pays per month?
Thinking about it if we paid for her boob job then they are ours I hope no-one goes up to her for a feel?
Never mind what ever we say on these pages nothing will change I bet by the end of the year she will be with child.
I don’t think her ex should of sold his story I beleive what went on between him and Joanne it’s between them. One thing her ex says she text him about 200 times a day/night Joanne said it was about 100 I take it we are paying for her phone also.

Don’t be taken in by the one catchy quote from Emma regarding tax payers money. Unless she can claim inequitably that every single one of her customers have never claimed states sick pay/unemployment benefit etc it’s somewhat a flawed argument. The reasons she was turned down was due to being infamous and not the ‘calibre’ Ms Cunningham wanted for her overpriced “dating (aka phoning up and making a reservation only) service”. In short Ms Cunningham is a bit of a snob.
I have to say though. It is all highly amusing.
Well done Emma , maybe ms Watson should join Plenty of fish. dating . its free and they take anyone

Does this woman have a “batphone” that connects her straight to the Daily Mail??
Seriously, the Mail must be absolutely loving the Watsons!!
Ever heard of Data Protection Ms Cunningham? I would be worried that she was sharing the names of other potential daters that she felt weren’t ‘suitable’. The dignified thing would have been to have kept quiet.
Since Ms Watson loves children so much and has so much free cash and yet is not in a situation to have anymore children I wondered if she would like to donate to one of mine. Just £2.00 a month, would be a great start and who knows one day my non benefit family might start to live in the same luxury as hers.
On the man front I think she must have scared anyone good and sensible off.
Well said W H Bonney the only taxpayers money to be spent on her should be for sterilization.
THis whole thing about her is just getting boring we all know she knows how to milk the system and regardless of what we say or think she wont stop and our spineless politicians will do nothing to try to stop it. Ms Watson has the skin of a rhino and continues to parade around without a care in the world (except for where/who her next child is coming from), she loves the attention and our reactions so why dont we all just ignore the stories in the papers and maybe she will stop seeking the attention. Lets not forget her children who I sus[pect are getting a lot or horrible remarks made to them and they are after all innocent they probably love their parents but not all this adverse attention in the media etc bought upon them by their moneygrabbing mother.
Well the UK Nationals are called the “Gutter Press” so that says a lot about Ms Watson really , at least most of are looking at the stars unlike her

Take it she turned you down as well then?
I applaud Emma for her forthright comment to Ms Watson’s application, which is fully justified. It pays to be choosey when running a dating agency of her calibre; imagine sitting around a dining table and finding Ms Ex Celeb Watson there too, yikes. I gather that Emma’s clientele are made up of discerning people, looking to meet others of a similar nature.
We already subscribe heavily to Ms Watson’s social life.

I think Ms watson gave up her data protection rights when she went to the paper about the subject. Emma was protecting her Company to which had for no reason appeared in the national paper. Also there is no need for Joanne to attend this if the grapevine of her now being pregnant is anything to be believed!!!

Good publicity for Guernsey Dinner Dating! I’m sure their services will skyrocket now that its known they don’t accept just anyone. I wouldn’t want to go on a date looking for “the one”… when Ms W turns up whose priority, through her own comments about her ex made to the daily mail, is just a sperm donor -wallet optional. If one wanted just that from a woman then there are many other services available, ones which use protection. The rate of STDs amongst over 40 divorcees have rocketed over the past decade and half of those who contract one (or more) will not show any symptoms. The statistics are all over the internet. Over 40s are now deemed more at risk than young adults who are the traditional target of safe-sex campaigns. Danger alerts should go off in anyones head when a new “partner” refuses to use a condom- whether they be male or female. If you refuse to practice it yourself then how can you preach it?
Trolley – Ms Watson disclosed the information herself via the daily mail.

As i stated in another post, from what i have seen of her Mrs Watson swans around acting like she can afford to buy the world! Emma, is right to turn her down because this kind of dating agency offers a service for the more “elite”, or u could say, those who can AFFORD to be part of such an agency. A bank isn’t going to give u a Loan unless it knows u have the means to repay does it? I get the feeling Mrs Watson feels the normal date lines are far too below her and would not provide her with a walking money/sperm bank that will also keep her in favour with her surgeon and all things shiny! Well done Emma for protecting ur clientel.

Well done Emma,I belong to Guernsey Dinner Dating and no way would have I wanted this woman next to me at the dinner table.

And she gets supplementary benefit.

she’s sick.

@Trolley
I think you’ll find (going by the article) that it was good old Ma Watson that ran bleating to the media that she was turned down by this particular agency and not Ms Cunningham that intially divulged the information.
No data to protect if the ‘injured’ party is already broadcasting from her nearest rooftop to whoever will listen as to how hard done by she is.
Personally I should think that any of her male clientele would be eternally grateful for the fact that she has spared them a potential encounter with this praying mantis of a woman.

Charlotte Lucy – mmmmm but most of us don’t make a career out of it. The odd patch of unemployment or sickness is a far cry from having 14 kids all on benefits. I find it particularly disgusting when the world is overpopulated already and resources badly distributed/running out.

You’ll probably find that Ms Cunningham is defending her stance on this matter after Watson went to the papers to complain (naming the dating service).
Well done Emma – with you all the way on this one :-)

No Stileto, I’ve been happily married for three years come this September. I can disagree with something without having been (or tried to be) a customer. I don’t like the idea of Ms Cunningham’s business. I think it’s poorly thought out and expensive. In an island the size of Guernsey it will be a flash in the pan. She could have kept a dignified silence and not gone to the Press. It doesn’t sound like many would have criticised her and indeed I can’t see a comment on the DM site doing that so why did she have to say anything at all? To get the moral high ground? To jump on the Watson bashing bandwagon?
Of course I don’t agree with Ms Watson’s “right” to join a dating agency. I really hope someone close to Ms Watson tells her to keep quiet for a while. She really is quite dim not to realise what kind of situation she’s putting herself in.
There is one comment that sticks out on the Mail site and I’ve copied and pasted it below.
“What a nasty, cruel piece of journalism. I can’t imagine this lady was told in advance that her story would be spun quite like this: this is a vicious and unwarranted character assassination. It might not be the kind of family set-up that everyone would choose, but, contrary to the way Kathryn Knight selectively portrays her, she doesn’t really strike me as a scheming, welfare-dependent harlot. Gutter journalism: and I’d question who has the moral upper hand here: the journalist, or the subject of the story? I’d say ‘shame on you, Daily Mail’, but, then again, it is the Daily Mail, after all. “
I would urge the Press not to follow suit in the “gutter journalism” that the Daily Mail seem so keen on.
Hey – forget the Daily Mail story and read what Rod Liddle has to say about her in the Sunday Times!
He just about sums it up and echoes all of our feelings locally.
Just imagine how many of them there will be in a few years time if all of her girl children each have 14 babies then after that their children all have 14 babies each – they could fill all of the States houses on the island quite comfortably!
Having said that I do feel so sorry for her children being put through the media wringer like this – its not their fault they were brought into this world.
Question: Why shouldn’t Emma keep Dinner Dating Agency open for a more “discerning” clientele? The type of person who would buy into this agency dosen’t really want (sorry) soiled goods with a less than ambitious moral compass. Here’s a thought. Ms Watson could expand her possible pool of sperm doners if she got out into the world of work – there’s lots of opportunity to meet “like minded people with a GSOH” in the sort of place she would be more suited. I will leave you guys to determine exactly where that might be – but I couldn’t imagine employing her in any classy place could you?
Well done Emma, at last someone on the island standing up to this mess! If only Social Security would start standing up to her too.
It makes me so mad to know that tax taken from my hard earned cash supports this family. I think it should be the taxpayers’ right that they can choose to no longer support this family. There should be a Watson’s tick box on next year’s tax form, I bet there wouldn’t be many people who would tick to continue supporting them.
Thankfully I’m happily married. However if I was single, and had trouble finding the time or the courage to get out and meet enough people to be dating, then Emma’s service would be the type of thing I would do.
“Set-Up” dating has enough of a bad stigma. And to her credit Miss cunningham appears to be trying to create something a little more bespoke, something for lonely people to meet other lonely people withough suffering the “stigma” that dating (can) attract.
If I were to pay £250, plus the fee for the evening and then be sat next to a woman who lets face it has absolutely no trouble finding partners and is more than likely (ab)using the service for completely different means, I’d frankly be livid and demand my money back.
Go to follies Miss Watson, its cheaper for you and for the taxpayer. And leave the genuine people looking for love and companionship alone!
Also can you lay off the Daily Mail whilst you are at it, you paint this island in a pretty bad light :(

I know Mrs Watson gets uniform and shoe vouchers but just wondering if the rest of the “child benefits” gets paid out to her as cash. Surely food vouchers, medical vouchers etc are a better way of ensuring the money goes to those who really needs it. And items such as uniform should not be allowed to be exchanged or refunded for other designer clothes etc.
I have to admit, in days gone by; the Guernsey Press has very rarely made me laugh, but with that said this article made me laugh like a hyena on goofy gas!
In what world would Ms Watson ever be accepted to such a thing? I wonder how many single businessmen are sitting there right at this very moment in time counting their blessings and wanting to thank Ms Cunningham for sticking to her guns, even though those guns were morally related and not specifically business related. Ms Cunningham, I salute you!
But on a side note, today (19th July) is now the third front page article Ms Watson has commanded. This has to stop. We are all aware of Ms Watson and her brood and while we can either sit back and ignore what this woman represents or lament and chastise her until the cows come home, we do not need to read about it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. So please, Guernsey Press, I beg you, please do not give this woman another ounce more coverage then she has already sucked out of the local and national news! I am sure there are much more pressing and altogether interesting things to report on.
Good day!

Until reading The Daily Mail on Saturday, where Miss Watson was quoted disclosing the fact that she had been refused membership to Guernsey Dinner Dating, I hadn’t laughed out loud to myself for ages!!
The service that Emma provides (successfully I may add!) is definately not intended as a quick baby donor finding facility – contrary to what some may think, sat round the dinner table are not a bunch of desperate men looking for any chance of a romance (and lets face it, how many men would be comfortable dating a single mum of 14 – whoever she was!)
The saddest, and quite upsetting thing in all of this is that there are 14 children who did not choose to find themselves in the public spotlight – yet again! – what chance do they stand of being able to get on and make their own lives if ‘poor me’ sympathy seeking stories are sold to the media every 5 minutes!!

Is this the tax black hole everyone is talking about
Cut the benefit and solve the islands tax collection problems.
In all seriousness you have to admire Miss Watson on bringing up so many children all of whom, I understand, are well behaved and always look smart and presentable.
I also understand she and her husband worked very hard but circumstances have moved against them. OK seeking publicity in the UK was maybe not a great idea but if this is being offset against her benefit claims all well and good.
I am an only child and would have loved brothers and sisters. She is by all accounts an excellent mum who loves and cares for her family.
There are plenty of families who abuse their children so I say turn your bile on them not on a decent mother whose only weakness seems to be that she adores children.

To be fair to Ms Watson she was trying to save a bit of taxpayers’ money. Apparantly her ex charged her £500 to give her a baby, so this dating lark would have only been half the price.
I should add that very sadly I believe she lost this baby, nobody deserves such a trauma, but it does make you wonder if it is her body saying “enough”

Emma Cunningham does not run an ‘exclusive’ service other than mentioning the word ‘exclusive’ just the once on her new re-branded website. I can’t say I have used her services but a friend of mine (who shares the same opinion) enquired after her services but declined joining for her own reasons. She wasn’t met with let alone ‘checked out’ but was given the opportunity to part with her £250 via email to join up.
Emma why don’t you have any info on this on your website? What’s the criteria to join up other than having the £250?
Emma Cunningham recognised Joanne Watson’s name and didn’t want her associated with her business. Rightly or wrongly she judged Joanne from what she’s heard or read in the papers. Let’s just call a spade a spade shall we? Perhaps a dignified silence would have been best.
You are all judging a woman from newspaper tabloids which want to sell papers with sensationalised headlines. Who knows how she was approached by the papers to sell her story and how things may have been distorted. Surely newspapers would all be moral and law abiding? oh wait…
The majority of posters (myself included) don’t actually know this woman and who are we (other than taxpayers which according to some on here seem to give you rights akin to God) to judge someone else by hearsay and gossip? I’m sure if a lot of you look at your own lives there will be things you are not so proud about. How easy it would be for someone to turn the spotlight on those things and for you all to be in the firing line.
I know this will stick in some posters throats and I’m not interested in having one-upmanship ongoing posts.

Mr Lloyd, Would you or any other posters really want someone who was not a personal friend (or even then) screening potential partners and deciding who you could potentially mix with? I would not want to be pigenoholed in terms of prospective partners because of a ‘professional’ ‘single mum’ ‘local’ or any other form of label.
I find it most distasteful that Ms Cunningham makes judgments about people seeking to join her service and wonder what criteria she uses to decide that someone is unworthy to join her organuisation – are tatooed people allowed? those with an IQ of less than 120? this is abhorent elitism.
What evidence do we have that Miss Watson obtained the joining fee ( arguably overpriced for what is offered?) from public funds? such could have ben a gift. I am appauled by the judgmentalism displayed in relation to this story. I smoke. It is my right to do so. I earn but I was not banned from smoking at any time in my life when I have not been lucky enough to be employed. Can Miss Watson not be left to live her life as she chooses, so long as that does not encroach upon others it is her basic human right to do so.

Emma knows who her client base are and would not accept someone’s money and take them onto her books if she thought it extremely unlikely that they would find a match with other members- how would that be fair?
As a member not only did I have email contact with her but then a lengthy face to face meeting before being offered membership which was dependant on checks including a police disclosure. This, I understand, is standard practice.
She has a wide range of people with various backgrounds (including single parents!) but aims to offer people dinner invitations with a group whom she feels they are likely to get along with, and obviously may include a potential match. Clients are paying her for that service so surely it is up to them if they choose to allow her that level of ‘pigeonholing’ discretion and judgement!!
For a start, nobody wants a benefit sponger. Secondly, the woman already has 14 children. Thirdly, Cunningham feels uncomfortable (ethically) taking money indirectly from the taxpayer.
Now throw your tomatoes.

I think some people are basing their argument on assumption that it’s Ms. Watson’s reputation that caused her to be rejected, not that I’d blame Ms. Cunningham for that.
No, the article states that “Emma Cunningham, the founder of Guernsey Dinner Dating, said she was not comfortable accepting Miss Watson’s joining fee as it came from the taxpayer.”
And to be fair, she has every right to do that. To be honest, the dinner dating service tends to attract the kind of people that wouldn’t go anywhere near Ms. Watson, and perhaps many would feel a little cheated that one of the seats on the table, of which they paid their own £250 to be near, was filled by someone who none of them would want to seriously get involved with, rather than a woman who could be a future wife.
Lets be honest. Watson’s child-factory is probably best fuelled by such classy establishments as Barbados or Folies…
Report abuse
We have no proof that the £250 was benefit money as Emz has already said. So therefore Emma Cunningham did draw assumptions from what she’s read in the papers.
L, just because someone walks into your place of work does not mean that you ‘know’ them and does not give you the right to judge them I’m afraid. BTW it’s also my tax money and a few thousand others. Based on what Joanne is claiming as benefit and also based on the amount of tax payers in Guernsey that equates to 1p per week that you are paying her …at most! I suggest that, as you seem to need your money back, next time she pops into your place of work you short change her by 52p and you’ll be straight for the year.
Guernsey girlie, perhaps Emma has changed her vetting process but as of Christmas last year this wasn’t the case. My friend was told about the police disclosure which is perfectly understandable but was not asked to meet with Emma or to even have a phone call with her. After a couple of (delayed!) responses from Emma via email she was then asked if she wanted to join and how to pay. There was no mention of any ‘criteria’ so I presume that this ‘criteria’ is completely subjective and can change depending on Emma’s mood? If there are certain requirements then publish them e.g must be in employment, must earn x, must not live in States house or claim any benefits… It would even have made sense that she had declined Joanne Watson after she received the police disclosure. But that’s not what happened. Therefore Emma DID judge her on just hearsay as she didn’t have any ‘evidence’ to confirm her assumptions of Joanne other than asking her a couple of questions relating to how many kids she had and what she did for a living. Therefore I’ve drawn the conclusion that single mothers who do not or cannot work or are perhaps inbetween jobs are not suitable for Dinner Dating as Emma Cunningham believes no one would want to meet them. If you’re a single mother and unemployed sorry…no hope it seems.

Lynne,
Could you please extend that invitation for every tax payer…. I’d like my £1 back please.
As I’ve stated before, people WANT to help the needy. The community rallies around those less fortunate, down on their luck so they can lift themselves back up again and contribute in the future. If you cannot work for some sad reason and have to live off benefits for the rest of your life then so be it-the community is there for you and will support you no matter what. Now, no matter how you twist it this does not apply to Ms Watson – by her own admission – her direct quotes. She chooses not to work, she has not had an accident, is not unfortunate or down on her luck, she chooses to take benefits and has no intention of working as long as she can avoid it by having baby after baby. She is the walking definition of “sponger” and has no intention of contributing anything to community, now or ever. She looks after herself and her own (appearances that is) and that is all.
There are many single mums out there who are exceptional citizens… they are part of the community, the vast majority give a lot back even via, you might not believe it but shock horror – “taxes”. As long as you treat others with respect I believe Emma would have no problem with anyone really. Openly stating how much you sponge off the community, openly stating that you “use” men for their sperm (ie texting a man 200x a day for sex with £500 bribes and disrespecting them in national papers), parading your children for money and exploiting your childs pregnancy for your own financial gain, is not by ANY definition respectable behaviour nor may i add is it the behaviour of a good parent. I admit I don’t know Emmas criteria but I really hope that “respectable citizen” would be high on her list as well as respect for others – openly treating others as sex objects or sperm objects is deplorable. As Emma said, she’s not the only person who has been turned down. Bravo for Emma for standing her ground.

Human Rights. This lady – I choose my word deliberately – has a right to privacy and a right not to have her homelife interferred with – I take the view that means that she and her children should not be exposed to a bunch of torchweilding harradons like something out of a Mary Shelley gothic novel baying for her blood because she does not conform to the way that they choose to live. If people cannot quietly enjoy their lives as they see fit then what next? burning Jews?
I believe very much in freedom of speech but am concerned that biased editing of posts may occur in terms that all and sundry may make sweeping judgments, without much substance, about Ms Watson, and she is percieved a soft target as she may not have come from a middle class background or have attained the requisite number of qualifications. It’s ok, though because if she has never paid over £5 for foie gras then we can all condemn her and take the part of a local buisness woman and support value judgments that she makes about people. Ms Watson is a person. Have any of you thought about the effect this has on her and her family. I don’t care that she sold her story. That’s probably where she got the money from that Miss Cunningham turned her nose up at. If my money came from the tobacco industry would ms Cunningam take it? if the money was from public funds its hardly the proceeds of child slavery/ prostitution.

Thank the Lord that I don’t pay tax.

@Wil….Very well put, I agree 100 plus percent!
@EMZ. Mrs Watson lost her right to privacy by opening her doors to publicity on how she rubs our noses revels in her lifestyle in the first place! The only one being disrespectful here is HER by pushing her children into the limelight and causing THEM unwanted attention for her OWN selfish gain. She may well be a person but so are we but where she sees us as walking wallets and sperm banks we see HER as the free loader she is!
@ L, She also comes into where I WORK and treats the staff like they are S*%t on her shoe!
So…. BOO HOO! Mrs Watsons attempt at fame and fortune seems to have backfired. She fell off her VERY high horse and NOW SHE IS WHINING?? Get a grip! She bought this onto herself! What did she expect? Us to all feel sorry for her and have a whip round and give her even more of our hard earned cash? I think She’s probably had one to many subsidised trips to Disneyland!

I think £250 is actually rather good value for a dating service, as long as you are intoduced to a like minded individual.
However, if you are some young man, and say that ‘you like children and ‘physical relationships”, then you know who the database would match you up with…

Someone please tell me how much was this family paid for their story to the national papers, and has it been declared to the benefits office. By the way, someone has to call the nationals to have a story printed, who did this ????? I have made a call to certain papers and if the story is worth printing it is worth a lot of money, I rest my case.

L – you have come on here and used poor grammar and spelling. Some would say then that you welcome ridicule because you have opened yourself up to such remarks. However, that would be mean. What’s the difference between that and everyone on here who’s slinging mud at Joanne Watson? in SHOUTY words no less.
