A NEW voice-directing picking system has transformed the way the Co-op warehouse at Longue Hougue Lane operates.

The computer system, which is believed to be the first of its kind to be used by staff at any warehouse in the island, works by voice detection technology and directs pickers around the warehouse to collect stock in a quicker and more efficient manner.

Until the beginning of this month staff had been working by using a labels system, brought in more than 10 years ago.

But following the installation of the new technology, pickers no longer have to sign off items as they are collected and placed into roll-cages. Instead, they talk through a headset to confirm they have taken the correct stock before being led to the next items by the computer.

Asda in Bristol has this system. However, it drives the employees mad because the computer is very sensitive to accents. Especially Guernsey accents and the number 2!
