Tough choices for Dairy over which local shops get butter

Wednesday 20th July 2011, 2:29PM BST.

Grant Le TissierA BATTLE is on to keep Guernsey butter for islanders.

Manor Farm Foods managing director Grant Le Tissier (pictured) said he had to make tough choices last week over who would get the 12 cases of butter he was allocated by the Dairy.

He decided to supply the product to Marks & Spencer’s and the Food Halls – leaving out the Co-op.

He blames the limited supply on its continued export to UK branches of Waitrose.

A spokesperson for Commerce and Employment said the Dairy had no choice but to fulfil demand from Waitrose.

Can someone tell me why I can purchase Guernsey Butter at Forest Stores for 99p and yet at the Co-op (if there is any) and other supermarkets it is in the region of £1.35?

That remark is a load of rubbish because waitrose in Bristol didn’t have any in stock last wednesday!

As a commited Waitrose shopper, supporter and purchaser of ‘Guernsey Butter’ we are currently down to one pack. And like you I was also disappointed to find my local Waitrose store (Lewes)is also out of stock! Just a suggestion, how about giving Ebay or Amazon a try.

PS.Horley Waitrose won’t have any after tomorrow.

Dairy dilemma! Presume they would lose Waitrose contract if not fulfilled!
Thus Dairy again overloaded with cream worth next to nothing, even us Guerns couldn’t eat that amount.
    2 possible solutions

Increase farmers’ milk quota. Use extra to ensure Waitrose & Guernsey markets satisfied.
With enough left over to make local yoghurt again, that was an under priced quality product, should never have been dropped

“Guernsey” butter (ie cream from Guernsey Cows) also made in Alderney & Sark. Occasionally available here. Brilliant for a treat but pricey
    Happy cholesterol in moderation all

    Absolutely – Guernsey yoghurts!!

How is it that we have arguably the best dairy herds in the world and yet no local yoghurts. How many mass-manufactured, synthetic tasting, insipid yoghurt products do we import to the shops here when the dairy (or local farms) could come up with their own home-grown products on our door step?

Come on Guernsey Dairy – sort it out!!

Yes, many of those yoghurts over the top on
pricing and advertising is just that (you pay for it!)
BTW an organic one contains 20% + sugar too. Ouch! Even if it’s organic sugar!
