Chouet test will rate wind power viability

Thursday 21st July 2011, 1:00PM BST.

Andrew CasebowOFFSHORE wind power could be on its way to Guernsey after permission was granted to erect a monitoring station at Chouet headland.

The equipment will test the wind speed on the coast and compare it with the airport to see if wind turbines would be viable.

Commerce and Employment agriculture and environment adviser Andrew Casebow believes wind power is more effective than tidal power in the immediate future as the technology is already in place.

‘I think preference is for tidal power but it will be about 10 years realistically before it is viable,’ Mr Casebow (pictured) said.

If they wanted to simulate something out at sea why didnt they put the equipment on top of the hanois lighthouse?

Oh dear! when will the pro wind lobby wake up and recognise that wind power is only ‘proven’ because of the massive susidies given by the dealing of Renewable Obligation certificates. These are traded world wide and make mega bucks for the owner of the land where turbines are installed, the owner of the company installing them and the investment banks trading the ‘ROC’s.
Tubines only work when the wind is above a certain level and below a certain level. In the meantime they cannot store the energy produced so back up has to be continued.
Expensive – in the UK each household is paying extra on their electrcity bills to pay for the subsidies
and Unreliable – even at sea
Why are the States getting involved. Is it to trade in ROCs? and then we the taxpayer will find our selves paying more in electricity bills see page 1 of the press!
I’m all for renewables BUT please let it be in a form that is not going to put extra cost on the tax payer and will be RELIABLE at all times
