ENVIRONMENT has breached planning laws by granting Castel douzaine permission to redevelop Cobo car park, according to the man who claims to own the land.

Thomas Holroyd said when a planning application was submitted the owner of the land was required to sign the document and, as he had not done so, he did not know how permission could be granted.

But the department was adamant it had not broken any regulations.

People who use the area were delighted the application had been approved.

    Mr Holroyd

Look at it this way.Somebody other than yourself will be paying to resurface and re-design the area

The Crown Officers must one day finally come up with an answer. If that answer is in your favour you’re quids in and you will be able to charge even more rent for the upgraded area

The douzaine suggest the Crown owns the land, but if that was the case why didn’t the Law Offices sign the planning application on behalf of the Crown instead of saying the owner couldn’t be found?

Here we go again. The owner of a fief is not necessarily the owner of the land. All it means is that the owner of the fief is entitled to a tax on the said property which would probably amount to less than £2 or £3 per annum in todays market. I believe that the Royal Court cancelled all dues many years ago, because of the cost to collect these very small amounts, which, by the way, could also be settled annually by paying with a dozen eggs, or a bushel of wheat, or some other means than cash.this is why allthough it had its place in olden times we have now moved on.I still have my ‘receipt’ book with my annual payments recorded, which was often done through an advocates office, with their charges always far exceeding the dues!

Get lost Mr Holroyd. You are a feudal pain in the backside and a scourge on the community with your selfish attitude. Like most Guernsey residents I care not one jot for your dubious claims of rights of ownership over this manifestly public piece of land. As Neil said in another thread, all this feudal nonsense should be swept from the legislation book and consigned to the history book – and with zilch compensation for people like you.

It is high time laws were tidied up regarding unknown or irresponsible land owners. Abandoned and neglected property of all kinds is a blight on any neighbourhood. The States or Parishes should have the right and responsibility to take ownership of all land and properties of this kind after a reasonable interval. They should come under public ownership or be auctioned. If rightful owners or heirs came forth they could be compensated but in most cases they never will. Although it doesn’t directly affect me I feel aggrieved for those neighbours of neglected property who suffer unfairly. In one stroke neighbourhoods could be tidied up and part of the black hole filled. Why not just get on with it?

    Well Martino;

I can agree with you on your little speech of enlightenment.
However I take it you would agree that all such claims be adjusted,

Thereby freeing our Island from the greedy paws of those who claim, not only the Channel Islands but places as far as 8000 miles from the shores of that(humph) green and pleasant land.
After all like the Musketeers loudly said ..

I do agree with you Islander about the Islas Malvinas. They weren’t worth all that bloodshed 29 years ago. And all this sanctimonious tosh from the British Government at the time about fighting for the rights of a couple of thousand ‘Falkland’ islanders of dubious breeding. The same British Government didn’t care two figs for the rights of the indigenous islanders of Diego Garcia when the USA demanded it as a military base during the height of the cold war. The Diego Garcians were simply booted out to make way for the yanks. British cant and hypocrisy at its finest.

(Sorry to go off topic here but it’s good to find some common ground and share some history with Islander)

Only one way to sort this out.

    Fight!!

For the people – Bradley Watson. For the opposition – Thomas Unglamourous Holroyd.

A win win scenario for the people as a Watson gives something back to Guernsey and the leech Holroyd bites the dust he never owned.

    Ah Martino:
You will probably get the same answer I got when I asked also about that Island Garcia Diego.

I was told to be quiet it was a necessity to help out. in other words that fabulous mighty wonder
    “SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP.”

One day people will come to their senses and find out all the BULL…. that flows through the world.

We discovered many things under occupation, things that had been exactly the opposite of that drummed into us at school with an English curriculum background. Our language wasn’t allowed at school, gradually they have driven the wedges deeper into our history.

We are donkeys, because when it becomes us we kick hard. we are also like Elephants we never forget.

It is up to every Guernsey person to carry our history forward to future generations.

Read our “Folklore” although strange at times the message is still there.
    We are Normans- not Anglo-Saxon.

    Haha Sugared Brazil Nut,

Liking the post and the image of Tom Holroyd in a pair of boxer shorts with gloves is just too funny. I think he would probably cry…(his idea of sport as I remember it involves stalking big game from behind the safety of a rifle of some description but I digress!)

Anyway – however much he rants and raves over what is being done to ‘his’ land if his case was as water tight as he seems to imagine then he would have had this whole sorry mess sorted out a long time ago.

His actions are those of an incredibly mean-spirited person who has led a very privileged life and has more wealth that most normal people can dream of.

Get over it Tom – concede that perhaps you should never have taken it this far and do the decent thing by ‘donating’ your interest (whatever that may be, if it exists)to the parish. Just for once – consider the greater good for people other than yourself.

Glad to see that you are back

Way off subject but did you see that little story in the Press over the weekend about the little girl who was last to evacuate on the last boat in 1940 as she was hauled over the boat rail by hand

I’m sure many readers found that very interesting, especially as the ‘little girl’ has now returned on a visit to the island

You must have many little gems like that in your head. I know you have no wish to be interviewed by English researchers but please consider writing them down somewhere privately so that perhaps when you’re gone to meet your maker your relatives can consider passing them on for posterity … for the Guernsey people

There can’t be many left who lived as a teenager through the occupation and still have the ability to record their experiences

    Ray!
The last time I remarked about those days of occupation; of the duplicity of certain people- of the treatment handed to us (with a smile of course) well it didn’t go down so well.

The way things had to go were written down and had to be adhered to, according to the so-called liberating forces.

According to the ‘liberators’ Islanders were fools for allowing things to happen, we should have stood up to the enemy etc etc.

It was beyond belief, that people could behave as they did behave. years later having got those; (whom we called turncoats) well and truly mesmerised with metal coins on pretty ribbons, they once again betrayed our Island, and still do.

And you want me to talk to them?

But it is all wrtten, and not forgotten.

Sorry, but I cannot now talk about those who were the worst, for most have gone, hopefully not upwards.

But then again we were always fighting the same nation…

    Ray:
You seem to enjoy tales of our Island and for that I say well done.

Perhaps you know more than you let on, again well done.

However I wonder how many truly know even some of our history…
    Without looking it up,
Why is it called Bailiffs Cross?
    Why is it White Rock.
    Why ..The Track.
Why the so-called enmity between Jersey and Guernsey? albeit of a jovial nature.

Those are simple little questions, but there are many other items, and yes many are old woman’s tales.. or are they?

Not all folklore tales are nonsense.

And all knowledge can be had from the Society Guernesiaise, Candie gardens has a wealth of information.

Did you know that at one time Guernsey was two Islands.
Why is it called Route Militaire, also Braye road.

Small items yet knowledge of our Island.

I find it deplorable that people know more about the UK than they do about their own Island. I talk of Guernsey people born and bred without any meaning of slur on other nations, just stating a fact.

You know and I know and goodness know how many know…’

If it was our problem, that bis to say a personal problem, how many would revolt at an the idea of some dictatorial body of elected (wrongfully it might seem) and do as the occupiers did; just to do as they wish.

I bet many of us would be up in arms.

Anyway has the old way just died out when all turned to help one in dire need..

And even so if nit nis absolutely certain that he owns that lkand, why isn’t the
“Clasmeur de Haro” not been used.
