Sarnian crews have a hard act to follow

Friday 22nd July 2011, 2:29PM BST.

Simon HenningGUERNSEY’S top sailors will hope to show their class again and beat the weather tomorrow in the re-arranged Carey Olsen Inter-Island Yacht Race.

The annual event is the biggest of the Channel Islands sailing calendar and last year the top five overall positions were filled by Guernsey boats.

They hoped to replicate that when the 2011 edition was originally scheduled for mid-June, but it was then postponed due to gale force winds.

But this time the forecast looks more promising, calmer but with enough wind to sail, and should that be the case the race will begin at 11am from St Aubin’s Bay in Jersey, with over 70 yachts making the dash up to St Peter Port.

One of the favourites for the event, which is handicapped according to ability, will be local sailor Simon Henning (pictured), who is racing in his Farr 45 Alice II, while Alan Stevens is also expected to feature prominently.
