WAITROSE is working with and assisting fish supplier Seafresh to get local shellfish stocked in its stores.
The supermarket has sold Seafresh fish on the counters of its Guernsey and Jersey branches since it opened but had also been keen to sell Channel Island-cooked brown crab and lobster, which it now does.
Waitrose’s support for Seafresh has included investment in specialist equipment, technical support and the help of a qualified consultant.
One of the pieces of machinery the supermarket has invested in is a device that ensures crabs and lobsters are killed as humanely as possible.

Well it’s a massive well done to these 2 lads – the work and effort they have put in to making Seafresh an incredible experience of local wetfish and shellfish for all of us has made shopping there a lovely experience. What these 2 guys have achieved in 2 years is quite remarkable and they deserve every recognition they get. They do the local fishing industry, our public and visitors and our island proud – well done lads !!!.

Agreed … but have you forgotten the Guernsey butter story ?

Hi Dave – point taken about the Guernsey Butter but i don’t know the full story – my comments were for the Seafresh boys – they are working so hard to provide the public and visitors with so much local fish and shellfish – their shop is awesome and pristine. Went there again today – really interesting local guys always willing to chat if they have time! – certainly have a passion for their industry.
Just so pleased that Guernsey people take pride in what they produce and pride in fellow islanders it’s just so much of a re-assurance for Guernsey folk.
Could you explain more about the butter – i have been away with the grandchildren for a few weeks so missed out.

Dave, what is the problem? Waitrose are a great company to have on the channel islands and are putting large amounts of money into charities and local community, they offer a great selection of produce both local and high quality alternatives. Why does every1 bash waitrose on here?
(if you go down the ‘they are too expensive’ route you are incorrect.

Craven,
I’ve got no idea how you came to the conclusion Dave was bashing Waitrose. He didn’t even mention them…
He’s saying they’ve done a great job with their shop. That has resulted in them being chosen to supply Waitrose.
Care to explain?

I think he was trying to say that it’s becoming hard to find Guernsey butter locally as Waitrose is buying it all to sell in their shops in the UK, and he’s worried that the same will happen with local fish & crab. Given that the vast majority of crab and lobster caught locally is exported to mainland Europe, I don’t think there’s a problem – Waitrose’s entry to the market should improve the prices paid to the fishermen, improve the quality of the landings, and improve the image of the island in the UK. All good things in my eyes.

Craven – you clearly mis-read my post. I for one love shopping at Waitrose and admire their input into island life – polite service and quality food is what we all deserve. I called into the boys at Seafresh again Saturday and once again despite an incredibly busy day they still found time to say hi and have a brief chat like they try to do with all of their customers. It’s just so nice to feel that you can once again shop traditionally – yes sometimes they are just so busy it’s impossible for them to stop and chat but every opportunity they have you will see them on the shop floor socialising and chatting about anything from the weather to world affairs. The Andy with the moustache is fascinating when you can get him into his political mode – very very interesting guy.
Good Luck to Waitrose and Seafresh Guernsey’s producers are going places and let’s hope more can follow in their footsteps.
Pedro – your’e right these guys have a serious passion for their industry and suppliers – quality is incredible – never seen fish so fresh, one of them told me that their record so far is 1 minute 30 seconds from boat to customer! they are by all accounts trying to beat the minute by the end of the summer – now that’s fresh !!!
