Les Genats children accused of duck cruelty

Les Genats resident Eleanor Duckworth helped a duck with a bad leg.

Les Genats resident Eleanor Duckworth helped a duck with a bad leg.

POLICE are investigating claims that children on Les Genats Estate are guilty of animal cruelty.

The enquiry follows allegations that a group of ducks were abused by the children. It is believed the birds were thrown against a fence and stamped on during the incident.

Estate residents said they were shocked by the allegations. ‘I felt physically sick when I heard,’ said Jodie Lomax.

Resident Eleanor Duckworth said she helped catch a duck with a bad leg, but she thought it had been run over. ‘I did not see any ill treatment and I’ve never heard about that sort of thing happening here before,’ she said.

The GSPCA confirmed that one duck had to be put to sleep, another was recovering at the Animal Shelter and another five have been relocated.

If indeed these allegations are true, these vile, callous, and sick individuals children or not need/ deserve to be dealt with accordingly by the police and the GSPCA. Under no circumstances should such twisted behaviours be tolerated shame on you whoever you are absoloutley appalling and sickening!!!

I can’t say I’m at all suprised, most, not all of the children down that estate are of this awful behaviour! No respect for anything or anyone, I can’t see it changing anytime soon either, these children are our Islands future and yet they are with this dreadful view of life.

This has been going around the estate for well over a week and is apparently true. I do agree with the fact that the children involved should be dealt with accordingly although I do not believe this will happen. One of the children app involved is above the age of legal responsibility and has been questioned more than 3 times by the police this year each time about a different allegation which vary in degree of severity. So please tell me why nothing have been done previously to protect not only animals but other younger children from this teenager. I do not however think the Heading Les Genets Kids is fair this would make people reading that headline think that every child down that estate is as bed as the 2+ individuals being accused of this action. And that is quite simply not true why tar every child because of where they live. Something needs to be done about certain children but so far the laws seems to protect them rather than reprimand then for their actions how is this going to teach them anything???

well said carol you are right. the individuals in involved are 12 and 2 are under 12, so can not be prosecuted. there is around 5 or 6 boys, on the estate that are left to please themselves, they have broke into property’s, threatened kids with knifes, so dont tar all les genats kids with same brush, this is not the only offence they have been involved in, and wont be the last, they know they will get away with it, they have no respect for adults, fowl language, the 12 year old has a string of offences so far, but nothing is done,

I agree that the headlines, Children from Les Genets should have read a “small group of children” as the majority, and i have to disagree Mrs Le Page with you stating that most of the children are bad behaved, it really is a minority. I have harped on this before but when Deecaf was operating there last summer for 8 weeks the crime rate was reduced by quite a large margin and majority of the young people on the estate attended daily and a couple classed as really bad also attended and by the end of the 8 weeks they were learning how to behave and were focused on positive events that was held. This project was told that were it successful it would continue, but sadly that didnt come to fruitition and was another “untruth”. The thing is people knock the estate and people who live there but when something good and positive happens it doesnt make the news and help and support for the continued project of Deecaf was not available. What these young people did is appalling and the worry is that not nipped in the bud the way they are they could continue to cause havoc and should be dealt with. But my point being that do not tar all the kids on the estate with the same brush.

Ive met a lot of people from that estate and it doesnt surprise me that the children do things like this. Its the way they are brought up. No respect for themselves or any other living creatures. Trouble is the parents just keep spitting the kids out one after the other. Then they let them do what they want “cant keep my eyes on them 24/7″ is the reply to situations like this.

@Ray – Thank you… That comment gave me a much needed laugh at work this morning!

In regards to this article however, gotta say that it’s pretty despicable, and that the kids should be dealt with harshly – and the parents – if this is true. I know what I’d do if I saw these brats doing this, so would like to see similarly hard-hitting punishments… Not that it will happen on this rock…

Like people have said, when I was young (not that long ago mind), my mum would take me to the park and we would FEED the ducks, no I haven’t had a sheltered upbringing, I’ve had a proper one, and I treat people properly because I’ve been taught respect. In a way I hope these kids don’t learn, as I know that any official punishments won’t be good enough. So I’d like to see them get a bit older, mess with the wrong person and then get put in their place that way – that would help.

As for the parents, if they seem to bring up bad eggs; unpaid community service for every crime their kids commit, and if theres more than 2-3 crimes committed (e.g. the kids aren’t learning), then forced sterilization of the parents so they don’t infect us with more miscreants – sounds good to me. Or perhaps a temporary or permanent end to any benefits they receive.

Of course the children should receive a fitting punishment, they must know what they did was wrong. If they decapitated ducklings they REALLY need help.

I was worried if no-one deals with the whole situation this could escalate into something else. There maybe reasons the children are exhibiting these types of behaviour and they should be addressed. What is sad is that the reasons may not be completely down to the child but their environment. Their own future lives and those of others would be affected negatively if this is not addressed correctly, which I think is even sadder.

It is not fair to tarnish all from the estate with the same brush, but there is always some sort of trouble going on. Maybe CCTV would prevent some of this but then it would become ‘big brother is watching’. OR maybe perhaps there parents should be keeping an eye on them, or at least if working, certainly punishing them serverely for these random acts of mindless stupidity. Maybe some sort of community service work could be brought in for the underage, and get them cleaning the roads, public toilets etc, all they are good for!!

One of the culprits of this crime has already been interviewed by police on more than one occasion. Yet is still allowed to wonder the estate creating trouble. The justice systems answer is to give this child a social worker and a slap on the wrist while the parents sit back and just do nothing. There are children as young as 3 left wondering the estate with no regard for there safety. Yet there are many children who’s parents have brought them up well to know right from wrong so please do not say they are all bad. It is a group of children of varying ages mostly boys. And @ Kim is it not decafs policy to not exclude children regardless of behaviour? How is this teaching them anything?

    Kids can be the cruelest.
Sadly in this day an age a parent or a teacher cannot give appropriate discipline (thanks to the law makers). A stern telling off, a grounding, a withdrawal of pocket money, a detention or expullsion does not do enough to teach kids right from wrong. You have to beat it into some of them.
Bring back the cane at schools, it would save so many of todays issues.

Carol, Deecaf never did exclude or bar anyone, at les genets or the one in town, yet people were not willing to support deecaf due to the fact they dealt with “yobs” as the young people were referred to on many occasion. I agree that excluding young people is not the answer and makes them feel more rejected and then it can become a problem. I did state that most of the children on the estate did attend Deecaf last summer and all of them behaved well when there. In fact the more challenging the child was Deecaf’s forte, in helping to make a difference.

Well tcb I`ve seemed to have hit a sore point. I still stand by what I`ve said.

You might be able to know where your children are 24/7, the parents of the children causing these terrible crimes don`t. Or they don`t care. As I`ve said I`ve met plenty of adults at the estate and it still does not surprise me that this sort of thing happens. The woods surrounding the estate are a disgrace and this goes to show that people living in that area have no respect for the place they live in.

Maybe its time for the estate to get together and start to have a bit of pride for where they live. Have a neighbour hood watch, clear up the woods.

It could be a much nicer place to live if you all started to behave like a community. Its got nothing to do with money, its got to do with your outlook on life.

caz – your comment 29/7 is another perfect example of irrational snobbish scapegoating against people living in states housing! you do not mention all the dozens of untidy, dirty, half wrecked houses, gardens and private land scattered throughout the island which are owned privately. why not have a go at those for bringing down the tone and not matching your skin deep standards. if a small number (within a large government-controlled concentration) of kids have behaved badly, the majority have not. will you talk the majority up for not behaving badly and trying hard and doing all the little things that matter? not a chance. you sort just like kicking the least powerful and most visible people in our society cos it is so so so easy for you to do. i see it’s also the fault of the police? so how about YOU do something positive and offer to help the community in someway? maybe you have already – i will be pleased to hear you confirm this. the 100% certain fact i believe is that if some ducks were maltreated by a couple of kids NOT on a states housing estate, this would be a fraction of the story it is – i dare anyone argue against that. also of note is that most of the reactionaries above would themselves use some kind of medieval violent retribution against the children concerned. an eye for an eye? cut off a hand? like any fundamentalists, you go ahead and pervert well-meant religion to smack up some kids then? you people are such great neighbours. i continue to fear for the people who receive government help in this island – the richer we get the more the poorer seem to be scapegoated. too many people doing well in this island will not be happy until those with the least have been airbrushed completely out of this hollow hollow picture paradise.

Blah – I do my bit for society by paying my tax and insurance and working. This money taken from my salary is put towards paying for the upkeep of states property and the surrounding area. As well as roads, schools, community projects and benefits, need I go on!. So as a tax payer it is my right to highlight areas that need attending to, if part of my tax money is taken to pay for them. Im also happy for part of this money to go towards benefits by the way – to help people/familys get back on their feet and then they can start contributing themselves by putting part of their tax money back into the system.

What people do with their privatly owned land is their business, as long as it does not infringe on their neighbours land. Dont get envious because some of us scrimp and save to get our own place and put off having kids until we can afford it. Yep youve probably heard it all before, but its true.

I also bring up my child to respect the place she lives in and the places she visits. Treat animals with kindness and do not litter. These are basic principles we should teach all the children no matter if they live in private housing or states housing.

It has nothing to do with irrational snobbish scapegoating. Unfortunatly for the decent familys living on these estates they are put next door to familys from hell. Ive seen it and experienced it. Its all social planning. I do blame the police for not doing more. The most troubled estates on this island need more attention paid to them, cctvs to catch familys with long term crudges against each other from scrapping in the street.

The states owned estates will unfortunatly get a bad name as some of the familys living there are a nightmare who breed and produce little nightmares and more often than not their neighbours are too scared to do anything about it.

So Blah what is your solution to the problem with the ducks then?

    caz – solution?

well… how about soaking the weathly tax avoiders, locals and non local alike, individual and company alike, to provide realistic resources to aid families (privately or publicly housed) with complex problems,to help prevent this type of alleged offending.

then try, god knows how, to turn around the dominant social values, especially marked in this rich island, that place material ownership and the flaunting of same, as the only measure of a person’s worth. the worthiness bar is set very high in guernsey but measured only in close-up, consumerism, such as a half million pound houses or endless roads of audis and bmws – wealth drips from this island and its power as a social value when it is right up in your face is hard to counter. it is absolutely no good telling all the children in primary school they are all equally worthy and decent, when once they are young adults, every blazing message sent out in the media and advertising sweeps away that fundamental truth and replaces it with – ‘listen kid you’re trash without all this stuff, even if you used to care about people and things, now you gotta elbow the little guy out the queue and grab even more stuff – win kid, forget how, forget the rule, forget the human, just win and get more stuff’. but, if the system ensures you can never compete fairly, then maybe you realise you were lied to and you stop caring.

support the police community initiatives – do not casually, irrationally, blame them and demoralise them.

support the states and volunteer organisationsa that are working in many parts of the island to support children and families.

ask the local media not to run one story after another about relatively small events which feature states tenants and which lead to disproportionately, increasingly vitriolic attacks by guernsey residents on their neighbours. ask why the local media do not focus on similar events in private housing. please see the latest typical and perfect example of mr michael ogier moaning about his female neighbour’s garden!!!! for god’s sake reflect on what an absolute non-story that was, yet has led, on another thread, to ANOTHER ridiculous over the top attack on another ordinary woman just trying to get along. she is being pilloried because she is a states house tenant and has two kids and some weeds in her garden!!!??? think about that!!! weeds!! what murderous weed-related detail did i miss there? i would simply suggest that mr ogier, that upstanding pillar of the community over many years, now with time on his side and obvious garden expertise, volunteer to HELP this woman out? and how about the guernsey press showing similar community spirit and help to banish this social disharmony (i am sure it would think that a good idea) by providing support like it did with the hospice, and stump up with the cost of a decent strimmer? sorted – win win win. whoever initiated this story should be exposed and be ashamed, whether it was mr o or the fearless press reporter who braved all to expose this outrage!

explain to the residents at les genats that now the grand bouet is gone, it is open season on their families from now on – so try hard to support each other and not be tempted by the media to do the opposite.

@ malcolm strange that really i think it is part of someone`s job description, not only was abuse found at cheale meat, but out of 8 killing house`s that animal aid filmed 7 were found to be abusing animals, the workers openly said, they are here to die anyway so who cares!

The problem with an estate as big as Les Genats is one bad apple spoils the lot. When one does something, others follow, just like lord of the flies. The parents also just couldnt care less, not all but some.

I was brought up on Les Genats and saw some disgusting things. Im in my thirties now and some of the things I saw were done by kids who are now parents on the same estate. I saw 2 instances of kids sexually abusing toddlers, one was one childs younger sister. I told the mother of the girls and neither believed me. Used condoms everywhere, smashed up and burnt out cars, needles. Know that one little scum bag held a lighter to a ducks beak and melted it. Kids climbing through old peoples open windows and robbing them. One kids mum sleeping with boys on the estate as young as 13 and he often saw her at it.

It is endless the amount of stuff that goes on down there. Some people have no ambition in life and are content to live a squalid embarasing shameless existance. Like I say, its not all of the residents but I do genuinely pity those who try to work, pay their way and live a decent life who have ended up living amongst some of these people.

I remember having strict parents and was too scared to misbehave as id get a good old hiding. My parents would be ashamed of me if I acted like some of those reprobates. Other parents just cant be bothered with the hassle. Maybe if the kids cant be prosocuted the parents should be. Make them do their job!

blah-I dont drive audis or a bmw my car is about 8 years old. Cant afford to replace it.

I think your moving away from the point. What about the ducks in this area?

No matter how complex your life is nobody has any right to abuse animals/children or another human being for that matter. You seem to think that throwing money at the situation would improve it-why? if people are ignorant already they are not going to listen to another individual.

The reason why this is in the paper is because a women who lives on the estate rang the paper and wanted people to know what was going on. She is frustrated with the estate and the police for not taking action.

The guernsey press is the product of a small island with not much news going on. So you have to put up with these rather small stories. Maybe you should move to the uk and read the local paper over there. Would it appeal to you more? Maybe a bit of rape with a murder thrown in?

So as Ive said before what do you think we should do about the duck situation, you seem to think you have a solution for all the islands ills.

    @Nocon

You must be winding us up…really?!

Your opinions on the human species are actually holding the rest of the planet back from evolving…

I never thought I would say this…I am speechless!

I will forever remember this as the moment I lost complete faith…well done Nocon!

Due to working at Les Genets this time last year, i have now become an honorary resident there, having got to know quite a few people on the estate that i didnt know before. When i first arrived most of the residents were very anti us being there, but with patience and talking to the residents and showing them that i wasnt there to judge, their opinion of me and our project changed and we had a brilliant summer there. When the project ended I felt that i wanted to keep in touch with these people i now called friends. I go there on a daily basis as my grandchildren are friends with a lot of the young people there and love to be a part of a community. The people there know that I am still willing to listen to them. I dont do this because Im a goody goody, I do it because I took the time to get to know people. I live in my own house, have never lived on an estate. You will always get good and bad in this world and having to mix together, but one part of the community are still willing to make it a nice place to live and i have seen new people arrive and they too have been made to feel welcome. Bringing people together takes time, but it can happen if people are willing to give it a go and not be judgemental or negative.

    Really

Maybe if the police had not got rid of PC Sexy this wouldnt have happened, seeing as everyone confirmed how good he was for the estate, including the moral of the single mothers ;-)

Like I said, the kids will do what they are allowed to get up to. Its the lazy parents that have no respect for themselves or anyone else that ruin them.
As for deecaf I have to say that place encoureged some not to work, bit like an unemployment club. A better way to fill these youngsters and unemployed peoples time would be to create a voluntery team that help out around the island constructively. This would get more people willing to fund than knowing they will be sat around drinking coffee and playing computer games and will also help their chances of getting employed. As an employer id be more inclined to take someone on that has been doing constructive volunty work than sat around doing nothing during their unemployment period. Its an advert for their work ethic, or lack of.

Guern, sadly you are not alone in your misconceptions concerning Deecaf, but i wish people had taken the time to find out what Deecaf was all about. We had people from all walks of life and backgrounds, unemployed and even employed young people, excluded kids from school, college kids, grammer school kids. We also had careers service call in once a week and they will have a record of the many young people that did get employment. I have members who are working their way up in a bank, have set up their own businesses, taken A levels, PA’s, the list goes on. We also did voluntary work Liberation Day, Floral Guernsey and Summer Wave helping with the childrens play area and also marshalling. We worked closely with the police force. We organised games challenges against other clubs/agencies. We held social events for under 18′s and for the over 18′s. We took pride in helping young people who had sometimes lost their way to gain confidence and self esteem. As i have said many times before I am proud of the young people we had over the years, hundreds of young people, with most being upstanding individuals and a part of the community and a lot of them also took up voluntary youth work. As i said, sadly people didnt look deeper into what Deecaf was all about, just knocked it and the people using it.
