Plans afoot to turn Mirus mess hall into self-catering

The Mirus mess hall at La Pointe Farm, St Saviour's, built by occupying German forces in 1943.
A RARE building from the Occupation could be turned into self-catering apartments, if planning approval is given.
However, a request to convert the former Mirus Battery mess hall into holiday accommodation has already been turned down once.
The building, which is part of the 11-acre site at La Pointe Farm, St Saviour’s, was built in 1943 by occupying German forces. Kevin Gallichan has owned the site for about 12 years and applied last year to convert the property, but permission was denied.
Mr Gallichan’s architect, Carl Foulds, said they were shocked at being turned down. He said they had attempted to make minimal changes to the building to make it usable and his client was trying to use the property to keep up with demand for self-catering accommodation.

I actually find it a pity none of the Mirus gun sites is open to the public.

Well worth an hour or two. Lots of fine work has been done to keep the fortifications in good condition for other generations to appreciate.

After the shenanigans surrounding the Cobo car park lark perhaps the Environment Department were concerned that Hitler would suddenly come out of hiding and claim ownership of the land under some erstwhile unknown feudal legislation….

I doubt if even Hitler would have believed these huts would still be around 68 years later, let alone getting a new lease of life. Now I’m trying to think of any post-war buildings which will last as long…

Thanks Paul. When I was over in april a very kind person showed us round one of those sites. I could see real museum potential with it.
