Deputy John Gollop asked the question following public pressure for the Policy Council to release information on a deal with UK fishermen.

THE States Assembly and Constitution Committee will not investigate departments which settle legal disputes confidentially with taxpayers’ money, its chairman said in the States yesterday.

Deputy John Gollop asked the question following public pressure for the Policy Council to release information on a deal with UK fishermen.

But SACC chairman Deputy Ivan Rihoy said the blunt answer to the deputy’s question was no.

‘The mandate that has been given to SACC by the Assembly contains no clause to give the authority to investigate such matters,’ he said.

Interesting snippet on Channel news on Thursday..

Guernsey fishermen brought in just over four million pounds into the economy in 2009

If they can do that with their small boats and quite a small fleet I wonder how much Interfish Wirons Ltd who, besides themselves were representing three other UK fishing companies, would have expected to earn with their larger boats since they were illegally banned since 2003?

    Four million times eight years?

    Six million times eight years?

    Ten million times eight years?

The mind boggles and yet only Deputy Gollop had the gumption to ask a question in our glorious Assembly

Still if the life of one mackerel ( and the career of one Law officer)was saved it will have all been worth it

Interesting comment PB – I didn’t realise I was a States member, or employee of News Corp.

Now you’ve enlightened me I’d better start attending the States meetings I’ve been missing for the last 3 years….and claim my back pay! I can also start tapping your mobile phone to find out when the next secret exodus meeting is.

    Another Guernsey shambles!

I wonder if the Policy Council’s latest consultant had a hand in this anti freedom of information debacle?

That would certainly have added a few more thousand to tax payer’s bill for the fishermen’s secret payout

It will only stop when the taxpayers make it stop

We can make it stop next April
