Vice president Jim Jamouneau and secretary Liz Naftel of the Royal Guernsey Agricultural and Horticultural Society, which held its cattle show at Saumarez Park yesterday.
THE Royal Agricultural and Horticultural cattle show took place yesterday with local farmers expressing concerns about the future of farming in Guernsey.
Kevin Gaudion, 31, has set up a Facebook group, which now has more than 370 members, in an effort to help save Guernsey’s young farmers.
‘Over the last three decades farming numbers have declined dramatically. Fifty years ago you would have seen around 300 farms but now it’s only 18,’ said Mr Gaudion.
‘Rising house and land prices make it almost impossible for potential farmers to get into the industry. The only way people get in at the moment is if it’s in the family – so it is affecting the industry on the island.’
