Takeaway owner has just six weeks to find £180,000

Jimmy WongA CHINESE takeaway owner who owes £188,556 on a confiscation order has been given more time to pay, but was told the court is starting to lose patience.

Jimmy Wong (pictured), of Dagmar, Becquet Road, St Peter Port, has been trying to sell his house to pay the debt but so far has been unsuccessful.

His advocate, Liam Roffey, said uncertainty over the future of the open market had made finding a buyer very difficult.

But he said an offer had recently been made and negotiations were ongoing to secure a sale.

In October, Mr Wong, whose real name is Chi Hung Wong, pleaded guilty to failing to deduct income tax from three Malaysian illegal immigrants who worked at his takeaway, Harbour View, at The Bridge.

Put him in prison until the debt is paid, that might concentrate his mind a bit.

Cracking picture GP. Straight out of your “look glum and evoke public sympathy” portfolio.

Nope, it’s not working for me. No sympathy whatsoever. He stole from the public purse. I recall in the original story that this thief even stated that some of his mates in the UK had harboured illegals and avoided tax whilst creaming in the profits, and that his level of fine was “unfair” since his mate only got hit for £40k.

Pay up and get out of the Island Mr Wong. Phil’s idea is a good one, but add the cost of his stay in our prison to what he already owes [plus interest].

One thing I really dislike about the O/M mentality on our Island, is that some incomers who can afford Open Market see an opportunity to buck the system. This man was savvy enough to come here, and yet now moans, that he is being held to ransom, via the state of Open Market.

I hope the court has had the sense to put a lien on the property so he doesn’t just sell it and scoot with the cash before he pays the fine. With luck he will follow his friends’ example and run his next dodgy business in the UK where they are far too soft on crooks like him.
