Give £1 to save North Show

JUST £1 from every household could help the North Show win its battle for survival, its organisers have said.
Collection envelopes will today start being distributed to all 29,000 addresses in the island.
Treasurer Stuart Wilson said the money would help to raise a £30,000 rainy day fund after last year’s bad weather kept attendances down.
He said the poor turn-out had decimated its back-up funds.

I will give nothing to this cause until it comes out of the dark ages…
Put the show on a weekend where everyone can attend it & it will make money – leave it on a Thursday when people are at work & it will die a slow lingering death…
No its not as busy as it used to be but that is because years ago everyone had a Thursday off & could attend…
Hardly Rocket Science now is it?

As residents of St Peter Port North, myself and my children are excluded from taking part in the North show, so why should we support it? Residents of St Sampsons, Vale and Castel can take part and can be members and get a discount on their entry to the show, by virtue of my postcode I cannot do these things. Perhaps when you open it up to the whole island I will consider supporting it.
Report abuse
W H Bonney…..Spot on!!! I’ve been saying the same thing for years about the West Show “Move it to a Friday and Saturday when people are off work”” But do the committee listen Hang they do …” Its Traditional they say”….Yes but its dieing a death.
More people means more money, then they could get bigger and better attractions and keep this great Guernsey tradition alive.
Report abuse
Hope they are hand delivering them as postage will add up!
W H Bonney – I think they’ve tried moving it to the weekend before.
Report abuse
No – Why should we – I live in st peter port and pay £10 for my family to join the south show. Why should I pay for the north when i get no benefit apart from visiting and then I still have to pay to park and enter (and its not cheap with two kids). If the amount was split three ways and shared between the shows then not an issue. Why should the north get approx £29k extra. Also its it not about time that the battle of flowers became more friendly like in jersey and have it through bulwer avenue or town….
Report abuse
I don`t think it should be moved to the weekend cos then everybody will either be shopping in town, going to Herm or watching the sandracing!
Report abuse
I’ll be sending round envelopes around asking for a pound from every household.
I just want a new BMW.

Wht should I pay to keep the show open for the following :-
Visitors (Non Locals)enjoyment..
Benefit Claimants / Non workers..
While I work to pay my taxes !
Do we get free entry if we pay ?
Report abuse
Tell you what StPeterPort Resident, I’ll dig deep and throw a whole extra pound in for you, on the condition that you promise not to bring your miserable, miserly self up to the better parishes.
Report abuse
I agree the show should be held at the weekend when more people are free to attend. Maybe organisers could do a poll at the donkey derby to see if those attending that would attend north show if it was at the weekend or even do a poll online through channel online? I do think it would be a shame for it to fall to the way side but times have changed and maybe the show needs to a bit too.
Report abuse
We need the North show to survive, I don’t think local people realise how much tourism the show brings to the island, I work in a local hotel and every year we have to turn people away as we are full, due to the show many who come year after year.

Sarnia,
While you`re at it mate, bung a quid in for me because I don`t think I`ll be donating to this lost cause. It`s OLD, It`s DYING and IT SHOULD BE PUT TO SLEEP.
There are times when you have to be cruel to be kind and this is one of them.
Close it down and see how many Islanders or visitors miss it, if there are enough supporters then get them to pay a tenner each.
What a Bloody Cheek sending out begging letters. In today`s monetary climate I`m sure people have far better uses for their money even if it only a pound each. GET STUFFED.
By the way, I don`t think this is a good idea.

I’ll send a couple of quid off to Jersey at the same time.

@sarniaa
I am not being miserly, but because of where we live my son is not allowed to enter the north show, even though all of his friends are able to. Both the north and south shows are struggling for money, the south show apparently went bankrupt a few years ago and stopped altogether, so my statement still stands we should just have an island wide show, or at least join the north and south ones. Why should those who enter the north show get a discount to see the battle of flowers (supposedly for everyone)? Just because I don’t live in the right area on the island I cannot get this discount, that is discrimination.
Report abuse
Return the envelope with or without cash but use the opportunity to vote for a move to the weekend if that’s what you want
St PeterPort Resident’s post would fit in well on the subject of island wide voting

Think I will put my pound toward the skate park, at least that will be a yearlong investment as opposed to a two day event that I wouldn’t waste money going to see the same old tat from when I was a kid.
Shut down the show and move with the times, Battle of Flowers kev run procession, Bulwer Avenue to Town on Liberation Day, now there is something that would be good for everyone to enjoy.
Liberation day seems to be suffering the same illness as this “Show”
Report abuse
What a cheek to even suggest this. What complete rubbish. I would be happier to put my pound towards a more worthy cause, certainly not some old show thank you very much.
Report abuse
Lots of different comments here .but perhaps we should for at least one year do a joint one.and island wide show.
we are only a small island and there are plenty of folks who love to enter
reading the results from other years it is always the same winners.
perhaps if we all joined in together it would be a better battle
a float from each parish perhaps .and this like has been said could start on a friday and go on over the weekend to support those who do work
and if it was free for children up to the age of 12 this would mean many families would be able to afford a day out .the shows itself could go onto Beau Se Jour as there is plenty of parking in and around the areas .then the flood lite parade could go along the sea front to finish it all off .try it it might work!
Report abuse
@kat
most sensible suggestion here.
My kids love to enter the classes at the shows, we are only a small island lets have one show for everyone or at least (if the organisers can’t come to an agreement) let people vote with their feet and enter whichever of the shows they want to regardless of where they live.
Report abuse
I would gladly pay to see the Battle of Flowers if it was an event with imaginative floats perhaps a smaller version of what Jersey do. I’m afraid to say that Guernsey cannot do floats like Jersey do. Sorry Guernsey float makers I’m sure you do put a great deal of effort in but Jersey’s Battle of Flowers does take your breath away.
I wonder how many visitors come here thinking they are actually going to Jersey for the wonderful carnival that is their Battle of Flowers.
I do think it’s a cheek asking for money though. What will be next? Will we all be expected to buy a Christmas light or 2 for Town this year I wonder?
Report abuse
WH Bonney is correct. The North Show needs to move with the times. Thursday is no longer half day closing as was the tradition in years gone by.
However if the Battle of Flowers was on a grander scale and the location was Bulwer Avenue to Town as has been suggested then maybe the half day closing could be re-introduced allowing the whole island to enjoy the parade? Just a thought.
Report abuse
Maybe if they dropped the entry and car park prices they may get more people in just a thought.

@Glanzstar
Add a pound to the entranec fee? don’t we pay enough already to enter these shows and to park! For our family of 5 to enter costs us a fortune. Does anyone know what the entrance fee is this year?
Report abuse
@kat
My husband and I have been saying a similar thing for years. Times have moved on and so should the shows.
A single 2/3 day event parish-wide that everyone can enter and participate in would, I think, attract more people (both to visit and perform)and make it more of an event.
Spending power could be pooled to put this on and a bigger, single event may attract more sponsorship. Families might also be more inclined not begrudge the charges asked (it would cost my family of 4 near enough £30 entrance only to go to the North Show on the Friday – which due to working hours we couldn’t get to until 6pm anyway) if they feel that they are getting a good deal for their money. Hence we won’t bother.
A sea-front Battle of the Flowers procession (maybe a different theme every year) similar to that in Jersey with fireworks etc afterwards would be fantastic and would create a carnival atmosphere for all ages. I like the idea of the parishes competing with those as well.
Report abuse
I am surprised the Environment Department has not had them all shut down already. Well I suppose they will get round to it at some point.
Report abuse
Have just found out it is £8 an adult and £5 a child. So for my me, my husband and our 3 children that is £33 just to get in! Ridiculous

following @kat’s suggestion why not merge all the shows into one extended show and then stage it at one of the North/South/West venues on a rota basis?
I would like to put a quid in for the show, but I’m a bit skint at the moment as I’ve just sent off my cheque for £2758.62* in the “Airport 2040″ collection envelope.

I agree that the show should be held over a weekend. As for lowereing the gate price, I disagree – I have been to a country show in the UK, the admission fee was £18. The parish shows with their tradional fare, and UK arena acts provide a good balance of entertainment and country show atmosphere.
Don’t change the fomat, just the day

I would like to know what will happen if I donate £1 and then the target isn’t met to keep the show going – what will happen to the donated money???
Report abuse
I still think combining the Battle of Flowers with Liberation Day would ba fantastic a big parade from the bridge to town and then all the floats parked up at north beach, with music and sweets thrown off the floats to the kids along the front like the powerboat parade used to be all those years ago.
Nearly everyone is off on that day and up for a fun time. Then go with the single show weekend idea that has been mentioned for everything else
Report abuse
Really
Sounds like a good idea but weather wise in early May could make it a bit risky
Report abuse
Ray
You correct, that is the only sticking point, although look how good the weather was earlier on this year, and look at it now, not the August we used to see anymore
Report abuse
The North show has to be run like a business, entertainment has to be booked months in advance and the organisers have to put their faith in the gods for good weather.
The last couple of years must have been a disaster for them with torrential rain, low gate numbers and still the same amount of invoices to be paid at the end of the day.
I have read in the Press that the show costs well in excess of £100,000 pounds to put on so the last couple of years must of hit them hard.
I would hate to see the North show come to an end so I for one will be putting a bit more in their envelope than a pound! I’m sure it’s a one off(weather permitting).
I think the show changed to the weekend a few years ago but it didn’t work out as most visitors travel to and from the island at weekends.
If anybody has any good ideas about funding the show or entertainment they would like to see then I’m sure the organisers would love to hear from you.
I’ve often wondered if the Jersey and Guernsey battles could work together to bring some class acts over and split the costs or even do a deal with Condor
Ferries and show some of their smaller floats over here.
Report abuse
@Glandstar..entrance fees to high already.
Report abuse
May is not a good month to do the battle as the flowers that would be needed are not in bloom.Unless other blooms could be used
like i have said the floats would look super as a flood lit parade.
As for the jersey ones coming over they used to other years come over .
but it is the costs of bringing them over .

£31 entry fee for a family of 5 “ridiculous”? I don’t think so. So much varied free stuff to enjoy once you’re in too.
Really
What a cracking idea. A celebration of the end of the Occupation being combined with a long standing CI tradition would be great.
Report abuse
The North Show reflects the general demise of the island.
Old,tired and very boring.
Report abuse
@lisa + RLP
Yes, but by putting in on the enterance fee they charge the people that are interested and want to go rather than blindly sending out envelopes.
Unless its being used as a feeler to guage attendance. So they can get a rough idea of the amount of familys from the number of envelopes that come back.
Report abuse
I agree that it would be better for everyone if the shows combined into an island wide one, my children would be more likely to want to take part if they were able to do so with their school friends, but as the school catchement areas are so different to the parish boundaries they are not able to do so. Surely those that take part in the shows regularly would benefit from opening them up to all of the islands as there will be more competition for them? If each of the shows is struggling and just getting by then surely combining their costs would make financial sense. I had heard that this has been suggested in the past but was vetoed by the west show (as money isn’t a problem for them! maybe the same people who vetoed any activities being allowed at the reservoir?).
I would not like to see the shows combined with liberation day, I think it is nice to have something during the summer holidays and at the height of the season (weather not withstanding!) I think perhaps it should run later into the evening so that those who work can join in, the Vaier Marche is always popular on a monday evening so I don’t see why the ‘North South Show’ cannot do the same.
I think it is unfair that if I lived in the vale I could be a member of the north show and get a discount to see the battle of flowers, perhaps it would be better if members of the south show were allowed to get into the north show as well and visa versa.
Report abuse
i wont be going there, hav’nt done so for years as its boring,just got back from jersey battle and it was well better then ours,so i’ll be going over there every year to watch, also they only charge for children from 14 up wards,not the younger ones,even the moon light parade was great,well worth the boat fare over there.roll on next year i say..ur be amazed how many local guerns go over there to watch it.
Report abuse
@karen,
i agree they should do a long the front parade,that would be great,where the whole island can come together and watch,

I live in the catchment area for the South Show but will be sending my pound to the North as I know they suffered badly with the weather last year and luckily I can afford that amount.
When the South Show first moved from the fields about 6-7 years ago it carried on for the next couple of years on the Wednesday and Thursday ( at St Martin’s school) but moving to the community centre 4 years ago and changing to a Friday and Saturday has led to an increase both in competitors and visitors.
My personal opinion is that one big island show is the way to go in the long term – resources could be pooled (financial, manpower, sponsorship etc), islanders could compete against each other both as individuals and as parishes, the best elements of each show could be retained, it could be held over 3-4 days etc etc. It would no doubt take some time to organise these changes and possibly involve a few bruised egos and arguments but nothing (or not much anyway) lasts for ever and sometimes change can be just what is needed.
Until then I will support all 3 shows as I believe they are worth holding on to.
Report abuse
@Sugared Brazil Nut
Sorry but £31 to me is a lot of money just to get in and unfortunately having the entrance fee so high is why a lot of people don’t go and why it is going downhill. Once you are in it is not all free. The fair costs a fortune, and if you take children in, you cannot say to them that they cannot go anything. To be fair to get in, go on a few fair rides and buy something to eat is very expensive for the average family. I know many people that are not going because of the cost.
Report abuse
The West will never merge with the North Show, the West works and has a completley different cultural identity.
Might be worth them considering moving it properly North to somewhere like the place they had the Guernsey Festival, right in the heart of the one of a major residential area, probably cheaper than renting the Park and easier access by foot and car.
Well if it’s about survival……………..
Report abuse
Much as I like tradition, aren’t the shows in gradual decline? Would it not make sense to have one show for the whole island which would actually be a spectacle and stand a chance of being profitable? Then get as much of it under cover as possible and some insurance against bad weather. I won’t be paying a £1 contribution or £8 entrance fees this year but I would pay £10 or more for a decent event staged at a weekend. Time for some fresh thinking?
Report abuse
@Kat & Karen
I agree with your comments. An Island Wide show would also bring in more of a competitive spirit, especially in the showing tents, I get fed up with seeing the same winners crop up year after year; Mr Government House gardner and his roses, etc, some of the shows’ entrants must be be as well, good for those who continue to try and break the chain though.
Whilst I agree with you Karen, ref your suggestion that Donkey Derby could be a good sounding ground, petition/comments wise – the DD is run by the Lions, who must be fully committed by now as the Derby is this Saturday – if they are willing to place a form to this effect on their stands, good for them.
Report abuse
What a lot of old miseries you are, dont give if you dont want to, they are only asking for a £1.00.
The North show is an old Guernsey tradition and needs to be retained, I think they did try holding it on a Saturday but were unsuccesful, all you moaners why dont you get on the committee and give some imput instead of moaning about everything Guernsey has to offer, believe we have a lot going on in this island. And an awful lot of armchair critics too.

We went along to the West Show in the early evening yesterday and for the first time ever I have to take exception to the comment ‘West is Best’. We usually make an annual pilgrimage from the industrial north to a great show but all the family commented that this year’s offering was the poorest we had seen in years. Aside from charity stalls, crown and anchor and food stalls there was nothing but three rusty tractors to see outside the tents. Very poor.

I would be more happy if this had been a donation for all three shows and not just the North as all could do with the funds.

If they distributed leaflets/posters around perhaps they would get some visitors! Just by accident some of our guests found the North show when driving past. When they ask for information………..nothing around! “Visit Guernsey events page” you would think all relevant information such as opening times, prices etc would be listed………………..no! Just a contact number to call what’s that all about? It’s August and a lot of tourists around BUT if Hotels have no literature on the event…

One show, Island wide. Starting Thursday through to Saturday. Ends with a moonlit parade. Live music on the Friday and the Saturday night. That would be worth paying for! I agree that the West Show was disappointing and hardly anything ‘free’ when you got in there.
Make it one BIG marvelous Gunersey Show AND advertise it!!! One thing this Island is NOT good at is advertising!! We do not all slavishly listen to Island FM or ‘read’ the Press [if it's even mentioned in there]

I live in the North Show area and recycled envelope upon receipt. Have to admire their cheek, but why would anyone want to give to this event. Tradition? So what? If an event can’t stand on it’s own two feet then it doesn’t deserve to survive. Many better causes in this island than the North Show
Report abuse
@Emma
Completely agree with you, West is Best. We went last night as it is cheaper than the North and the children got to see the animals which they loved (which are not at the North).
It is simple. People don’t need to give this £1. Bring the entrance fee down even a little bit and you will see more people / families attending and this shortfall in funds being met. Keep the entrance fee this high and the amount of people walking through the gates will dwindle.

The states of guernsey seem quite happy to fund seminars worldwide showing people how to evade tax in their place of domicile,they also seem quite happy to fund trips for deputys and their assistants to sit in meetings twiddling thumbs and shoving paper around,maybe they should spend some of this money on local people,eg local as people who are born here not the imports who now think they are local,ship them all out,starting at the top

I come to Guernsey 3 or 4 times every year but to find out the details and dates of events happening in the island in advance is very difficult. This year we were there for the south show and missed the others.
The Battle of flowers is a good entertainment but companies on the island do not really support it as they used to do – possibly they do not realise how much publicity they get by doing it. Do people realise how widely this is reported on TV? My brother in Canada sees it on their news – how much do you really want to be recognised internationally ??
Wake up Guernsey residents – spend your time celebrating that you are not a small replica of other places and have something very different to offer and set about enjoying that fact and letting others know.
Maybe you would like to live elsewhere if you are not wanting to be a real part of Guernsey.

What a great post. You are right to make us locals think about what we have here and to appreciate it instead of continually taking the negative stance.
Report abuse
Kay
With all respect, us sleeping locals are left wandering why we are being asked to pay for a show that is so dull and out of date.
They are no longer making profits as attendance is dwindelling due to the fact that they provide pretty much the same thing every year and overcharge for entry £31 for a family and that is before you walk in.
I think that if you read all of the posts on here the majority of them are making suggestions as to how this and other shows could be improved going forward, such as trying it over weekends, having one consolidated show etc I do not see much negativity at all.
I dont think that Guernsey people need to be told to wake up to be honest, I find that quite offensive.
Us Guernsey people tend to be very proud of our island and our heritage even if it is being taken apart piece by piece by the circus that is the States.
I am glad that you enjoy our hospitality 3 or 4 times a year, maybe you could refer to the tourism department in order to get the dates of the shows for next year?

I am afraid that I gave up going to the shows a few years ago when it became customary to bring in the fairs and their accompanying fairground rides. Too noisy – cant have a conversation within 50 metres of the rides, too expensive and they completely take away the tradition of the old shows I remember from the 70s, 80,s and 90′s. I know the locals put in so much effort to make the shows a success and I wish them every luck in this continuing. I wonder does the cost of bringing the fairs over come out of the entrance fees?

Shame really, if an envelope dropped through my door asking for support for all 3 shows I’d have put in significantly more than £1, and as a consequence, the North Show would have gotten more than a quid from my donation.
I attend the west show every year, it always has a fantastic atmosphere, you can really sense the community spirit still, and dare I say, this is the only show left that really does give you that sense of belonging to a community.
To that end I’m not sure why the North Show think they are special enough to expect the whole island to pay for their shortcomings. Many of whom wouldnt attend.
All 3 shows need help, but I find it a bit annoying that the North have decided to go cap in hand in such a flagrant manner. Does anyone know if they even offered a joint campaign to the other 2, if not, then all the more reason for me not to donate.
