AN ADVOCATE’S gallant attempt to become the first Guernsey person on record to swim around the island had to be aborted after 10 hours in the water on Saturday.

Adrian Sarchet, 36, began his swim at the Castle Breakwater steps just after 8am from where he headed in a northerly direction.

Hours later and battling against tiredness and worsening sea conditions, Mr Sarchet was helped from the water just beyond La Prevote, on the island’s south coast, at about 6.15pm.

‘It was like a millpond going down the west coast, but it was like turning a switch when we got to Pleinmont and there was a two-metres swell,’ he said afterwards.

I must say, he did jolly well to get that far. I have enough trouble just getting INTO the sea at all, it`s so bloney cold!

Absolutely amazing effort to get as far as he did. I’m in awe of anyone who can swim that far and for that long in the seas around here. Well done Adrian.

Did Adrian plan to undertake the swim during the peak of a spring tide specifically?

I would of thought that a neap tide was better suited. The faster direction exchange of the water can make any sort of sea bound travel more difficult as the sea tends to be prone to being rougher.

I hope you do try again soon, the weather is calm and you do it on the smallest neap tider possible !

Great effort Adrian….I so wish I had your stamina but methinks my age at +3-score…is somewhat against me now…:0)

Yes a brave attempt well done Adrian. But in the long history of the island are we really sure no body has done this before ? I find that hard to believe ?

@conrad – I believe it has been done but I think it was a Jersey swimmer. I don’t know if any other Guernsey swimmer has done it.
