Eversley 1, Guernsey FC 2
Saturday 20th August 2011, 3:31PM BST.
A late winner from Ross Allen sent Guernsey to the top of the Combined Counties League this afteroon.
Guernsey withstood early pressure and took the lead when Matt Loaring (pictured) slotted home after he was put through by Craig Young.
Eversley equalised just before the hour with a bullet free kick from 30 yards by Raymond Spence.
The Lions soaked up the pressure, however, and Allen finished from an acute angle on the counter-attack with 10 minutes to go.
The match saw Ryan Zico-Black making things happen in midfield, while the centre back pairing of Alex Le Prevost and Tom Strawbridge was outstanding.

I haven’t posted for a while and have waited until I could see the wake of GFC. I watched Belgrave Wanderers vs Rovers today and have to be honest, I know that seveal were invited to a wedding, but it was like watching grass grow. The refereee did not help, Mr Gilman was shocking and the Rovers midfield player (Scouse) was a disgrace. He is obviously a decent player in our now depleted league but it is such a shame that that talent will obviously go to waste. Rovers just bin him, after a blatant punch on David Martin he was red carded (perfectly correct) but David Martin quite rightly reacted and also got a red card. I would not allow anyone to punch me without reacting so why should David Martin? The referee sent both of them off, a disgraceful and utterly stupid decision. Gilman should not ref at this level, and the whole game became a farce as he did not have control. Bin Gilman (a joke) and this scouse (who ever he thinks he is) Bels must wonder what they have to do after having the ball in the net twice and losing 1-0. This game was awful and proved to be another nail in the coffin of Guernsey football outside of GFC as there was obviously a bigger committment to a certain wedding than to Guernsey football. I am sick to death of pickers and chooses both on the GFC front and those who choose to go to weddings. What about us supporters?

Are you for real? A player who throws a punch in retaliation shouldn’t be sent off? Which rule book do you use?
Summer weddings happen. Always have and always will. Usually on Saturdays too! If a club knows that it has a wedding surely its possible to request no game that day if done early enough. I suspect its poor communication and poor admin which caused it. Unlikely that the wedding date wasn’t known months ago.
Totally ridiculous for local league football to be starting so early. There is simply no need. Some clubs will go 3 weeks without playing later in the season and then finish in mid-March.

Post of the week by Gerald Largo.
Talk about an epic fail on perspective. Criticising people who go to a wedding (one of the biggest events in two peoples lives) instead of playing one game of amateur football.
If Mr Largo is typical of the “fans” that attend these matches I think the wedding party were entirely justified.
sorry gerald we agree on many subjects, but both players had to go, i didnt see the game, but am led to believe that it was poor. as for players missing because of a wedding, gone are the days when weddings were planned around the football season.I dont know the attendance, but would hope that some of the new supporters of football would have been there.

First of all i have not nicknamed myself scouse, that just seems to be what people call me. i dont particularly like it if im honest. how would you like to be called guern all the time. but whatever is easiest i realy dont mind.
Secondly me and dave had a little coming together, he stood up immediately and grabbed me round the throat, of which i reacted when i agree i definately shouldnt have, but in the spare of the moment i did and we had a little scuffle and were both sent off. completely the right desiscion from the referee. of whome said after the game that he was going to give dave a straight red for the grabbing of the throat alone, so if only i had kept my cool things would have been different.
But as you put it if someone grabbed you round the throat you would ‘quite rightfully react’. sometimes in a competitve sport things like this happen we both shook hands afterwards and i look forward to the next time we go into battle in the next game against bels.
I also agree with GM comments about the weddings, so in fact Mr Largo you are a ‘DISGRACE’ for not getting your facts right before making comment, ask any player or fan who isnt biased and who saw the indicdent wether dave grabbed me round the throat first and they will tell you he did. but this isnt about who did what in what order we were both in the wrong and the desisicon from the referee reflects that.
this prooves Mr Largo that your about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
regards
Luke Graham

Feel free to pop to the GFA headquarters to pick up a referee registration form and ne sure to get your name down for the next refereeing course if you’re that passionate about it.

I have seen you play a number of times and your attitude on the pitch is absolutely horrendous! I watched one game vs St Martins last year when you were sent off in the second half, but could easily have been sent off after 15 minutes and at regular intervals after that.

@G Child
all opinions really, i got in the saints players faces and forced a few errors that lead to some good chances. i was sent off for not being ten yards away from a free kick and got caught out when the taker took it quick and hit it against me. unfortunate.
i will agree my attitude and aggression has not been focused in the right areas and i need to work on that im 22 and still learning, my fitness and injuries is the main thing and its a combination of wanting to win sometimes too much and too hard and the factors mentioned above that cause anger in myself more than anything.
im working on all of this, alot of other players have done just as bad as me drillot etc but get away woth it, i feel im targetted now but thats my own fault and need to change that.

Gerald Largo, I would love to say your complete lack of knowledge of anything football astounds me but actually you continue to write post after post of tripe – Are you watching the correct sport? reading from the correct rule book? You are truly a bitter human who threw his toys out of the pram when things didn’t go his way with formation Guernsey FC and have been sulking since.
If you don’t like the local football, if you think the referees are rubbish, if you don’t enjoy watching the likes of Luke Graham, then don’t watch it.
A better course of action would be to get off your seat, get to Footes Lane for the Lions home games, shout and cheer as loud as you can and stand up and be counted!
I think that gerald largo should think before he speaks such rubbish. If one of your close friends was to get married would you play in a local football match instead of attending? If you would i believe you need to take a long hard look at yourself and really sort your priorities out!!!!!!! ITS NOT PROFESSIONAL SPORT ITS A HOBBIE
Report abuse
Gerald Largo, one final though…
“What about us supporters?”
Who is it you are actually supporting? It certainly isn’t local football.
I think there’s a considerable amount of honesty being spoken here by Luke Graham. Maybe I’m naïve but that’s quite refreshing. We all make mistakes. Let’s give the lad a chance and see if he can control that aggression. Being a combative midfielder is not a crime. The art is in knowing where the line is drawn.
@ Luke Graham I admire you for replying for yourself to my comments but there are much more instances of your ‘out of control’ behaviour than have been mentioned here. A couple of weeks ago again vs Belgraves you should have been sent off, a preseason friendly, there is nothing friendly about you. You will pick on the wrong person very soon and I for one will be delighted to see a bully put in his place. You are a disgrace, I am happy to give individuals a second chance but you have had chance after chance. This issue should disappear as you will spend so much time banned or suspended for which I am totally grateful.
I paid £3 to watch the game on Saturday, as I do week in week out during the season at all different local clubs, my committment to local football cannot be questioned

what a strange thread does this have anything to do with GFC?
Well done Tony and the boys – good stuff!

@gerald largo.
one thing about me that you will notice i dont pick and choose who i tackle or hu i get into handbags with. i do the exact same thing to drillot carl wallbridge anyone im certainly am not a bully. there is no such thing as a friendly game. its football.go and watch a north west counties division 1 game or is that to rough for you.
you know me on a fottball pitch not in person so dont judge wether im a friendly person or not.
pick on the wrong person like who, you tell me who the wrong person to pick on would be and i bet you i have tackled that person just as hard as anyother player

still trying to find out attendance of this game. it should have been good, gsy f.c. were away so all of the new gsy football followers should have been supporting local football, if they are really interested in football, i see gerald largo was, well done gerald

Gerald Largo
Your commitment to local football may be unquestionable but your credibility certainly is if you don’t think a player who throws a punch in retaliation shouldn’t be sent off.
You are quite right though in saying that Luke Graham and indeed any other players with poor disciplinary records will learn their lesson the hard way through suspensions. Their club coaches will (or atr least should) also make it clear that a suspended player is not of much use.

Lets get back on track, GFC did a great job at the weekend. Well done!! Hopefully you will win many more games. I am hoping to see the match on the 3rd!

Gerald. I don’t know Luke Graham on or off the pitch, hopefully one day I will see him play. Sounds to me like the lad has a bit of fire in his heart and wants to put in the big tackles. So he gets a bit fiery, so what, anyone remember Cantona, Keane, Viera, Zidane?
Leave him be, all this retribution nonsense, if he puts in a dirty tackle and gets a thump for it then so be it. But I’m pretty sure by the sounds of things that he’ll pick himself up and crack on.
Gerald, Calling him a disgrace is unjustified and pretty hurtful. How do you know that he doesn’t help 85 year old Doris do her weekly shop or drives disabled people to community centre’s. Narrow minded Gerald. You appear to have lost any sense of reality.

Some petty sniping going on here about Guernsey FC, and why the new supporters who have jumped on the band wagon are not at local Priaulx games.
As one of thos band wagon jumpers I bet in 2-3 seasons the whole of Guernsey football, right down to the minis, will be in a far better state.
I have had some minor involvement in local football and one thing which astounded me was the small minded jealousy which went on at the so called higher levels.
No wonder Guernsey football was in the doldrums for the last 3-4 decades and going down the pan. Come on you Lions!

@ luke graham
are you actually stating here that you did not punch david martin first last weekend? in other words martin hit you first? are you actually stating here that you did not slap david martin across the head in the friendly a couple of weeks ago? why do you only mention drillot and wallbridge? is it that they are bels players? there is a difference between a bit fiery and how you behave on the pitch. you are in a dream world

Just having a little look at how Guernsey got on the other day and see this all about the Joey Barton of Guernsey football.
Hopefully play against him later in the season! (if he isnt suspended)??

no we had a tckle and he stood up and grabbed me round the throat, and i threw the first punch in retaliation to him grabbing me round the throat. i will admit first punch was me but if someone grabbed u round the throat what would you do. i should have walked away but i didnt. It happens.
sorry tht i only mention bels players thats cos bels is in my head with this conversation same goes for any player ive not got anything against bels.
and last week it was not dave martin hu i gave a friendly slap round the head it was some one else. i went to shake his hand as i walked off and he declined the offer so i give him a clip. so get your facts right

Luke…….I don’t know you, never seen you play and have no idea if you help grannies with their shopping but your mindset is all wrong. The phrase you used…….’next time we go into battle’ would worry me slightly if I were your coach. This is the classic English ‘football is war’ mentality which has helped undermine the development of skilled footballers in this country. Going onto the pitch thinking that you are entering a war zone is a recipe of disaster. If someone grabs you (even by the throat) not retaliating doesn’t mean that you’ve been humiliated or lost face. It’s a sign that you’re in control, you’re disciplined, you’re a serious footballer. They’re the ones who look stupid. Don’t sink to their level. Football is not about who’s the toughest but who’s the most skillfull. You may well be a fantastic footballer but people will never talk about that if you keep getting sent off.

This subject has gone on for to long, Luke when i was involved in gsy football i had many players who could look after themselves. but they could play a bit. so i as a coach made sure that they used the ability with the physical part. Isuggest Luke that you get your head down and prove to yourself you can play, you will now have a reputation, dont try and live up to it, and keep off the comment pages until you prove yourself. I dont know you, but will watch out with interest
Report abuse
Its time this topic came to an end.Luke you need to prove to yourself that you can play football, over the years as a coach i had players who could look after themselves, and as a coach i had to ensure they had the skills to go with the tough side.Luke i dont know you, but why dont you keep your head down, leave the hard man image to others, and prove to others you can play football, and keep off the comments page until you do
Report abuse
Luke, your comment to smarty kind of sums up the problem it appears you have – if someone doesn’t want to shake your hand it is
a) their prerogative;
b) their problem if they don’t want to be good sports;
c) possible they didn’t even realise what you wanted.
In none of the above is the appropriate response a clip round the head. Sorry, but again, that’s technically assault.
The appropriate response at worst is a shrug, think to yourself what a wally the other guy is, walk off and forget about it.

A bit off topic, but the same thing happens in town sooo many times. In Guernsey, more so than I’ve seen even in places like London or Birmingham, it’s all about “respect”, or more accurately dissing someone.
HOW MANY TIMES have I heard things like “What are you lookin at” or even more stupidly “You were lookin at my mate”
That’s my favourite – idiots who wade into things or start things off because they think their FRIEND has been somehow dissed.
Makes me slap my own head!!!

I note that various footballers who have commented about themselves on this article have never used the words ‘skill’ or sportsmanship’ to describe themselves.
Probably answers the question as to why so few people go to watch Priaulx footie and why Guernsey FC is proving to be so successful.

Gerald/Shep,
Luke is my cousin and yes he is a bit of a nightmare on the pitch but he has admitted he was wrong and will no doubt learn from this.
Off the pitch our Luke is the idol of my 3 year old son who loves him to bits and he couldn’t do enough for his family, think you need to be careful what you say, as you clearly don’t know him!!
So much for well done Gsy FC, which is what the article was about. This has just turned into a witch hunt against one person which is very unfair. Every one is entitled to their own opinion (it is called a democractic society), yes Luke may not be the best player on the pitch and have trouble controlling his aggression. But it is not about one player it is about the island/community as a whole and watching/palying the game we all love. So leave him alone.
Stop arguing and picking on each other and focus all the energy into supporting Gsy FC, Bels, Saints, Sylvans, Rovers, Rangers, North and Val Rec.
At least Luke is focusing his energy on the pitch (yes maybe not in the right way at times) but no one is perfect.
Good luck to Guernsey away to Frimley Green and Cobham over the weekend.
Up the greens.
ps Gerald instead of moaning about the refs why don’t you offer your services as a ref, as you are obviously think you know everything. Then you will see how tough it really is.
Sorry, A Proud Guern; it’s not been a witch hunt. In fact, the person’s name wasn’t even mentioned by the poster who brought the subject up. It was only after the individual presented his rebuttal that the debate opened up. Once you have made a stand on here, you have to be prepared to defend it – credit to him for so doing.
