Belt-tightening, no new taxes and a Budget imbalance

Deputy Matt FallaizeNO NEW taxes, continued efforts to cut States spending, but a failure to balance the Budget this term are likely to feature in a key report to be released on Friday.

The States Strategic Plan will set out priorities for the next year, propose new areas of spending, as well as updating progress on high-level policies including progress made by the corporate tax strategy,

Signs of what is to come were revealed in an answer to a written question to the chief minister from Deputy Matt Fallaize (pictured) – which also showed that the Policy Council, in conjunction with Treasury, has failed to produce a detailed report as directed to by members on how it will return to a balanced Budget. There will, however, be an update.

The current strategy to eliminate the deficit is a combination of maintaining a freeze in revenue spending and savings from the financial transformation programme.
