Watson scares the ace grunter

IT WAS the day the arch grunter from Russia was very nearly silenced by the quiet girl from Guernsey.

But after 154 minutes of brave resistance and having, remarkably, been a set up against the world number four and three-times Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova, Heather Watson bowed out of the US Open at Flushing Meadows 6-3, 5-7, 3-6.

Watson, ranked 100 places below her glamour opponent in the latest WTA rankings, played a stonker of a match that had the noisy Russian desperately worried and searching deep within herself for answers on the huge Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Even deep into the second set there was every chance that the Guernsey girl could cause a huge upset.

    She did fantastically well and clearly has an even bigger future ahead of her than most of us will have thought possible.
    Shame the match was ruined by Sharapova’s grunting – its about time that the world governing body clamped down on that as its way over the top.
