TENNIS star Heather Watson has been applauded by the world’s media for her ‘gutsy’ performance in the US Open.

The 19-year-old Guernseywoman impressed millions of fans on Monday as she won the first set against world number four and three-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova.

Although she lost the match 6-3, 5-7, 3-6 reports published around the globe – including India, Australia and America – described the 154-minute match as a near-upset of epic proportions.

BBC Sport said the British number three could be proud after the stern test she provided for third-seeded Sharapova.

Briliant performance by Heather ! Absolutely Brilliant !

And I bet if they had banned this horrible, distracting habit of demonic, animal grunting by players such as Sharapova, Heather would have won in two sets !

I wouldnt want to be her midwife when she has children ;-)

Unlucky for Heather, she very nearly had her at 5 all in the second but Sharpovas experience and power won through in the end. Hopefully she’ll get another shot and as big a stage and get the win her efforts deserve.

I’d be well happy to be the lucky one at conception though.

I’m sure HW will go onto very big things after such a close game. With her skill level, and at such a young age, it’s clear she has the ingredients to be huge in her chosen sport.

Superb gutsy performance by Heather, with a bit more experience she would have won. Its time they banned the grunting as I believe Sharapova uses it to try and distract her opponents.

Sharapova did not play well because a very competent Heather Watson stopped her playing well.

I’m sure if you saw the game you will l have realised just how well the Guernsey girl did against the number 3 seed.

A superb performance from Heather Watson deserves praise not your cheap insults.

You clearly haven’t got a clue. The world number 3 playing below par played a girl ranked 170th-ish who played above par. One outperformed and the other one underperformed, but Sharapova could only play as well as Heather allowed her to.
Please stop trolling. Everyone on here seems to be sick and tired of you.

Sharapova also had this to say about our Heather:

“She did many things well. She’s a great mover on the court. She made me hit a lot of balls. She was really, really steady. She handled pace pretty well.”

Of course Sharapova would claim she played below par. She would hardly admit that she was outplayed for most of the first two sets by a teenager whose ranking was about 100 below hers.

The fact is that the good performance of Heather Watson prevented Sharapova from playing at her best.

    Sharapova Goes Out

    That firmly proves my point about watson,a under par Sharapova is beaten after making 12 double faults and 60 unforced errors in an erratic performance.(Even people like Stephen John should realise the meaning of a UNFORCED error}

Shes clearly below her normal form as she was against watson, however on this occasion her opponenet was able to take advantage and WIN the game.

Pennetta, the 26th seed, came through 6-3 3-6 6-4 in a dramatic match on Arthur Ashe Stadium

Now lets see how many people admit THEY WERE WRONG AND I WAS RIGHT

    Meanwhile

Romania’s Monica Niculescu thrashed Czech 27th seed Lucie Safarova 6-0 6-1 to set up a surprise last-16 match against Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who beat Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3 6-1.

Such a shame that HW was only ranked 170ish in the world (how much higher she is now after her last performance I don’t know). Still 170th in the world is quite an achievement. It’s pleasing to see a locally born youngster doing so well in such a competitive world sport.

If all you can do is seek out reasons to undermine her achievements so far I suggest you keep your sour and pathetic thoughts to yourself.

Sigh….. If only Heather was as good at tennis as you are at being a prat Sharapova on top form wouldn’t have even won a single point.

I would like to see how you would compare in a match against Sharapova. As you are so quick to criticize Heather on her excellent performance i can only assume you have some undiscovered talent for tennis.

I notice that one of your posts stated
“Now maybe you all know better than Sharapova” in relation to her comment about her performance. However as well as commenting on her own performance, and as Martino’s post states, Sharapova commented on how well Heather had played. So obviously you also “know better than Sharapova”.

PB Falla. Like Matt Le Tissier before her, Heather is Guernsey born and bred. Both locals had to leave the Island at a young age to pursue their sporting dreams.

Matt never won a medal/championship and only played for England a handful of times. I am sure if Heather never wins a thing she, like Matt, will bring alot of joy to Islanders as we jump off our settees punching the air when she wins, or holding our heads in dismay when she loses.

Who knows what Heather will achieve in the next 10 years? What will PB Falla achieve in the next 10 years?

I know many Islanders will thoroughly enjoy watching ‘one of their own’ growing into an intelligent, talented young lady playing in tournaments in all four corners of the World.

I hope to see Heather for many more years to come, grinning in the papers and no doubt being photographed with a number of hunky eligible bachelors on her arm!! C’mon Heather, do it for Guernsey!
