GHA wants former Boys’ Grammar site for housing

FORTY new houses and flats will be built at the former Boys’ Grammar School if Environment agrees to plans submitted by the Guernsey Housing Association.

The association yesterday confirmed it had finalised its proposals for the Brock Road site, which has for some time been earmarked for redevelopment into social housing.

It is part of the Education Department’s plan to return some of its land to the States as the College of FE and central services relocate to the former St Peter Port School.

GHA chief executive Steve Williams (pictured) said the plans, if accepted, would result in 24 two- and three-bed houses and 16 one- and two-bed flats being built.

Really happy to read that there is to be a retention and conversion of the main school building as part of this development.

I never did think that the block at the rear of the main building fit in with the old school (the only good thing in it was the trampolene and the stairs we used to stand under to see the visiting college girls knickers as they went upstairs. I got the cane twice for that). No tights in those days and stockings not allowed (shame that).
Thank you Gillian, yours were the most frilly and not the standard green flanelette.

    Boys will be boys.

I have never been a NIMBY in my life and fully support the use of social housing as a means to house those people who do not qualify for council/states housing but cannot afford to buy properties or pay normal market rents. But I live on Brock Road and feel compelled to comment on this story. I would hope that the old Grammar School buildings are stipulated to be retained by Environment and that normal GHA criteria are strictly applied when assessing potential tenants. Also, on a more practical level, Brock Road is already a very busy road with limited parking and many residential properties. Is Environment going to do its best to ensure that traffic management/controls on the road are utilised to the best possible degree? I have concerns that potentially introducing 20 or 30 more cars to the road (albeit some with off street parking) may produce yet more parking and speed issues on this very busy one way street. Presumably there will be public consultation and I would ask the States to afford Brock Road and other local area residents sufficient opportunity to voice their concerns before the project is given the green light.

    Machne,

Your posting is a perfect decription of a NIMBY person and I`m glad to see that you recognise your own weeknesses but may I add that you are also a SNOB to consider yourself above, as you put it, “those people who do not qualify for Council/States housing”.

I have a feeling that you are one of the lucky people in life that has had the good fortune either to inherit your house or had a good enough income to be able to afford to buy or rent property.

Good for you but please come down off of your pedistal and let those that are less fortunate than you to at least try to get on with their lives, in accomodation supplied by The States Housing Authority, even if you consider them to be of a lower class than you.

Is yours the house with the manicured garden (kept pristeen by your gardener) and servant entrance at the side door? The Rolls Royce parked under the gold awning outside the front door looks very fitting for the area. I`ll try not to rev my motor as I pass in fear of disturbing your lie in.

Please continue to enjoy your snotty life.

Dear Peter, Many thanks indeed for your completely and utterly predictable response to my post. All I would say to you is that if this sort of scheme was proposed for your road, would you still have the same response? And be honest about it please.

If there is spare land in SPP then let it be used. What Jersey has certainly done right is ensure that the vast majority of its population, some 80% isn’t it?, live in St Helier.

The more people in town the more viable it be and the less pressure on any green field or horticultural sites.

Seems sensible use of States owned land to me.
