‘Bridge big enough for both of us’ sandwich shop says
Monday 12th September 2011, 2:29PM BST.
A NEW sandwich shop on the Bridge has opened next to the Roll Bar due to the prime location and not to create a rivalry, its owner has said.
Hansens Grab N’ Go began operating on the Bridge last Monday where Fletcher Sports used to be.
Anthony Hansen (pictured) said he had been looking to expand from Town for a couple of years and due to the lack of available premises on the Bridge, he had to grab the opportunity while it was there.
‘We are in a prime position for the Bridge,’ he said. ‘It’s on the main intersection, in the middle of the main drag and by one of the main entrances to Leale’s Yard, so if that takes off it will be great.

Maybe the ‘happy’ (note use of sarcasm) staff in Roll Bar will buck their ideas up and not be so miserable anymore!!

hopefully prices will go down at the roll bar

I know its not 100% the time but I would agree with Jon on the staff in there.
Hopefully a new guy in town will force all to up their game.
Win win for the consumer

i have never ever been in a shop where the staff were so rude, would never go to roll bar again even if i was starving …the ‘person ‘ that served me was mumbling so i said pardon …she shouted to her mate something sarcastic about her speaking japanese …i hope this other business takes off and has polite staff

The Roll Bar staff seem to take far too long for very basic tasks that should only take seconds to complete. They are not rude but far from bright and cheery. Their products are good enough and much better compared to some. Prices have been creeping up there lately but are a bargain compared to Boulangerie Victor Hugo. £1.30 for a can of coke is shocking for Guernsey. Even in London that would be consumed in a very fine establishment indeed. A packed lunch coming in at good sit down bar lunch prices.
With the Co-op development on the horizon I’d say this was a good business decision by Anthony Hansen. If he can do a Greggs style outlet with similar prices he’ll do very well indeed.
I bet the greasy spoon will see a boom in takings too. Many of the existing traders should see the opportunities and tailor their business accordingly. A bit of vibrancy is well needed there. For the life of me I can never work out why parking is at such a premium there at times.
The other end of the bridge resembles a cheap car lot. Very little has been done about the dozens of old bangers desperately waiting for a sucker with more money than sense.
Something should be done to limit the amount of for sale vehicles littering the area. It is not the nicest picture for visitors or locals wanting somewhere to park up and enjoy a quick bite.

Hansens….. Its all about the Cajun Melt… Classic eating right there…

There you are Anthony H get yourself great happy staff and your business will be booming that and good priced food you will do well.
Hope you do very well with the business.
PS judging by these posts ( good staff ) is the way to go

Best wishes to Tony in his new venture.
He (and his staff) sure know how to make a tasty chicken sandwich.

Good to see some business acumen right there. With all the work going on around that area the amount of workman looking for food would put too much strain on Roll Bar, which in my opinion is a bit too expensive and as has been said before, slow.
Used to use Hansens in Pollet and always found them reasonable, busy but polite.
Healthy competition never hurt anyone, good to see someone expanding their small business.

Have used the Pollet shop before and am glad they have opened one on the bridge too, really good quality food (better than the roll bar to be honest) and I found the staff in the new shop really polite.

What staff do you mean at the Roll Bar? is it all the staff? or just during the week. I find nothing wrong with them (yet).
Actually I find the majority of the staff (the couple of older ladies in there esp) very polite. They know their regulars and I find them very accommodating. There are a couple of younger ones (one of them so sour faced it’s unreal) that are very rude though.
Agree with Victor Hugo – lovely staff but v v overpriced

Seeing these comments about how ‘rude’ the roll bar staff are has really upset me. Having worked there for the past two years as a Saturday girl I have tried my best to be polite and welcoming to all customers and can only apologise to the people who feel otherwise. To the comments about how ‘slow’ we are we can only apologise again for this but as the food is all made fresh we can only go as fast as we can to insure the best quality as possible. Again, I can only apologise to the people who feel they have received bad service but we are and have always been, trying our best.

I have to say this is a tricky one…
I have always used The Roll Bar, and I have always found the staff to be really pleasant. As someone else mentioned they know their regulars. They even remember my order. At times I have noticed a slight change in their mannerism and charm. Let’s be realistic though, have you seen how busy those guys get. I am sure anyone here would dip in enthusiasm in the middle of a busy Friday shift. Especially after one or two rude customers. They represent what Guernsey should be, same faces, same service etc. etc.
I have never seen any of them being rude, I think that some people are just far too expecting from people. Their turnaround time is brilliant. I have used them for years.
However, Hansen’s do have an excellent vegetarian selection. They also use good ingredients and they have consistency of product. The guy that runs it seems to know what he’s doing when it comes to running a food outlet.
I think they will both do fine to be honest! There is plenty of business and I can see people using both as anyone who buys their lunch everyday gets tired of monotony.
I wish them both the best of luck…

Hansen’s are great – friendly, polite staff and great food with plenty fillings.
Local – a friendly tip. If you’re after a packed lunch but want to use a sandwich bar, buy your cans of coke from the supermarket (preferebly on special offer) then take them with you. Same applies for crisps and chocolates if you’re into that. Then all you need to do is buy the roll.
If you buy a can, chocolate bar and bag of crisps you could end up saving yourself over £1 a day – and a fortune over the course of a year.

I already do do that. I pay less than 30 pence for a can of drink from the supermarket. I make my own sandwiches now too.
By doing so I am better off to the tune of at least £20 per week. My lunches are superb. Time management is the key. I resent being robbed blind. Much worse is being scammed for something that does little for the taste buds. Forecourts take note.
I have always found the ingredients at The Roll Bar of a decent quality. The fillings generous. Just the amount of time waiting seems a little on the long side.
They must have realised by now when their busy times are most likely to occur and plan accordingly. This seemed to escape them on the majority of times I’ve been there.
The customer experience is not as good as it should be. I’ve never known any of them to be rude but I can’t ever recall leaving feeling they are good and really happen in their work.
Rhianne
To the best of my knowledge I have never used them on a Saturday. I can exclude you entirely from my comments.
The youngster staff are generally more friendly and enthusiastic in my opinion.

oooooo AK you say the have a good vegetarian selection , which is great, do they by any chance do any vegan things, cos over here eating out is a nightmare, so just a cheeky question really x

Vegetarians eat animal products without realising it on a daily basis. Animal products are found in drinks, washing powders and numerous other things that the average person uses but would never realise until they have done thorough research on what the scientific names given on the individual ingredients on everything they purchase.
I doubt any vegetarian could ever get away without eating, drinking or coming into contact with animal products unless they had an organic island to themselves and controlled everything rigorously.
I purposely feed vegetarians meat products when I have invited them around numerous times in the past.
You consume animal products. There is no such thing as a total vegan in today’s day and age. I’d like to take you out bunny stumping on my quad one weekend. You’d be spitting feathers at first. Then you would quickly get into it and be buzzing like a nutter.
Our newest member was a vegan for twelve years. He now holds the stomping record. Nineteen in one night. They are then recycled for dog and ferret food. I make a mean rabbit pie and stew with my spoils.

@Brodie
They have an awesome vegetarian selection!
As for Vegan choices…it isn’t particularly in depth i’m afraid.
I was a vegan for a while but when I realized I couldn’t really go out to eat anywhere over here I soon reverted back to vegetarianism.
@Quad bike rider
I am not going to reply to any of your bait postings, but I will say that vegetarians aren’t all that naive.
We make a choice and we research what is involved, It is much more than a status symbol (to most of us anyway) so please only make opinions on something you have first hand experience with…and I won’t tell you how to service your quad bike or skin a helpless and defenseless rabbit, deal?
Thanks!
