Broadband: ‘Infrastructure will limit speed gains’

DESPITE the recently announced upgrade, Guernsey’s internet infrastructure needs a lot more work to meet future demand, Wave has said.

Sure is currently working to take all users on the 8Mb package up to 16Mb, with work going on throughout this month to get everyone up to speed.

But Tim Ringsdore (pictured), the managing director of Sure’s competitor, Wave, was critical of the telecoms company’s plans.

‘While we agree this is an acceptable speed for today’s needs, we do not see any commitment or plans from Sure yet to invest in the fibre infrastructure that would be needed to fulfil the future requirements of consumers.’

Yes, ive been told exactly this by Sure, except when they last upgraded the network to provide users with 8mb.
We were only able to get 3 in our area, so i contacted Sure and asked if / when they might resolve this, i was told that a new exchange was due to be installed in my area – i would have to wait 6 months until June of this year, but it would fix the issues we were having.
Roll forward 9 months to now and i call them again to ask when i might get the uprated speeds. Answer i cant (still on 3mb), but im told luckily all thats needed is an exchange upgrade in my area. Yippee i thought, so that was installed in June?! Oh no, that was never planned for June, im now told it might possibly be installed by end of Q1 2012.
Im betting i know the response next year when i am still operating at 3mb!

Is TIM of Wave looking for Sure to invest in the infrastructure and piggy back on the technology? What is he doing to help? Wave provides a poor signal cover for the island. It should get this right before criticising a long established and loyal company to the Island

    I’m getting almost 5Mb/s on a Sure “Dongle” for £10 a month.
Maybe you should cancel your Landline broadband and get one of those until all the work is completed, if speed is your only gripe??

I had no idea Guernsey was soo behind the times! I remember being upgraded to 16Mbps many years ago here on the mainland. My connection is also due to be upgraded next Friday to FTTC at 40Mbit/s down and 10Mbit/s up. All for just £18 per month.

It’s quite bad that the UK is not more consistent on broadband, Guernsey should be the same as any other part of the UK. I guess it’s simply bad local management.

Lucky old you, Ben. I’m paying £25 a month for between 1.1 and 1.8 Mbps depending on the time of day. And still it conks out at least once every day, sometimes I can’t get reconnected for quite a while even after a re-boot. Sure sucks!
