HEATHER WATSON won her first round match in the $220,000 Bell Challenge tournament in Quebec yesterday.

She beat Luxembourg’s Anne Kremer 6-2, 6-4 and is likely to meet fifth seed Sofia Arvidsson, of Sweden, in the next round.

Watson, the world number 107, said afterwards that she had to save a lot of break points in the first set against a player ranked 54 places below her.

The tournament is the only WTA event played on carpet.
