THE GSPCA has asked islanders to be vigilant after 18 sick gulls were brought in over the weekend suffering from a mystery illness.

The types that have been found are adult and juvenile black back and herring gulls.

The first birds appeared at the GSPCA on Saturday afternoon, with most found on the west coast and some towards the north of the island.

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said the birds were being found in lethargic states and were deteriorating quickly.

I think a toxicology examination would be a wiser move than asking the public to be vigilant. If a somebody has had enough of these birds crapping everywhere then he or she is hardly going to be shouting it from the rooftops.

At times they can be a bit on the daring side when it comes to their never ending desire for food. I can easily see how one could be annoyed.

I’d like to be able to shoot them. Let’s face facts. They are plentiful and a nuisance. For some strange reason the queen loves them so good folk like myself would get heavily fined and gun licences revoked for controlling them. It looks like somebody is doing their bit already. Good work in my opinion.

Quad Bike Rider – Surely they are only a nuisance because we ‘encourage’ them by leaving easy food out in the form of flimsy binsacks? Left where they should be i.e. at sea and on the cliffs, gulls are beautiful birds and do a great job of cleaning things up.
And poisoning any creature – if that is what has happened here – is never a humane way to go about things.

The pigeons too – I wish they would do something about the deluge of them in town and stop that old man littering the streets with bird food to feed them with.
