MORE than £100m. will have to be spent on improving Guernsey’s harbours by 2020, the harbourmaster has said.
Captain Peter Gill was speaking yesterday at a Chamber of Commerce talk and tour at the St Peter Port harbour.
He said there were a number of issues facing the harbours including the ageing infrastructure, commercialisation and deep water berths.
‘There has been very little investment made in the structures and equipment at the harbour for many, many years,’ he said.

Where exactly is £100m going to come from Captain Pete?
how did he decide on the figure of 100 million ?
I recall the cranes needing to be replaced (apparently) as mend and reuse appears a thing of the past when spending sprees are rampant.
However with the Airport likely to suck up 100 million it leaves sod all pennies so this will be an axe that certain people will grind to commercialise our Harbour and Airport. Making other people pay yet more for miss management.
Watch this space as they say…
This lot are soo bad at being mindful of a stitch in time saves nine, it sure well dose and the States appear crap at proper maintenance schedules, you only have to look at the schools for evidence of this.
the states have known for years that the harbour jetty was crumbling and would not take the weight of modern cranes, but as usual they just let things go
Report abuse
Better start saving…..

£100m allows some flexibility, wondered why Pierre is wearing a Hard Hat and hi vis vest whilst the visitors do not, Titanic Lifeboat syndrome ?

Another project we will have to find the money for. Another “must have” so we will be squeezed again for more money.
Runway, schools and now the harbour in such a state they are not fit for purpose.
What the hell were our politicans and civil servants doing for all those years? Why was nothing done over those years that all these facilities have got into such a bad state? Anyone with “common sense” for instance will maintain their house as things develop not wait till its almost falling down. It is not only planning that lack common sense but Government itself!

Hi.
So what did Balvac do in the 5 years and millions of pounds later when they were here?
I’ve always said, be easier to demolish and rebuild rather than attempting to make good!
GD.
Surely harbours are far more important than fancy airports for any small island nation.
Jeff,
Could try charging companies some tax again instead of relying on individuals tax take to finance it………..
Oh no, maybe not, that would upset too many important (rich) people!
This has been known for years, which makes the Airport work even more suspisious… the harbours are our life line not the airport.
More justification to keep Airport project to a minimum spend (resurface existing runway only)
What essentials (eg food, fuel, shop goods) come in there ~~ not much!
Ah Guernsey, cloud cuckoo land as ever
Report abuse
It would make much more sense to relocate the airport and do both projects back to back. The land the current airport sits on would finance the new build and provide some change for the coffers.
I don’t believe 80 odd million adds up. Least of all when one considers other airports having had similar, but much larger, projects done for less than a quarter of the price.
The above looks suspiciously like another deal with Belle Greve Bay will be back on the table before too long.
The current states seem hell bent on bankrupting the island before their term of office is over. Long overdue for quite a few too. I’d be shocked if BF and LT get a look in again.
Common sense and caution is what’s needed if the island wants to stay in credit.
so whilst the rest of the world curls up it’s toes and braces itself for a second wave of recession, Guernsey continues to spend like a some sort of demented, short sighted, shop-o-holic bull in an incredibly expensive china shop.
god help us all.

My essential Daily Mail comes in via the airport
Report abuse
As has been pointed out by others…… the airport project should be reduced in scale with just the essential work done so that excess funds could be redirected to the port refurbishments, without which we would surely sink.
soph,
I’d say the airport provides many ‘essentials’,
do you not consider it essential to receive medical treatment overseas?
When you order something urgent from the UK on fast delivery how do you think it gets here?
I’ll give you a clue – its not by sea!
The airport is one of only two lifelines we have.
rosie,
I think you will find that all the work being carried out at the airport is essential, it is being done to ensure it conforms to CAA regulations.
Kevin. I’m not querying whether the works are essential or not, as of course we need a decent Airport.
I am, nevertheless, like MANY, very concerned with the actual size of this project (one of the largest in EUROPE), and the way they are going about it.
If we are to believe the limited amount of information in the Press and through PSD’s incredibly expensive comm’s, it will all be ‘fine’, but that’s not even half the story…
Feel free to come along to the next (Western parishes) meeting, Kevin, (date TBA) see the plans, hear what PSD has to say, and if you feel suitably informed and remain convinced, then fair play, I’ll happily agree to differ.
Don’t agree. the Airport project is being done to comply with maximum regulations. The scope and scale is not commiserate with this being an Island where maximum can not be supported or justified.
Guern abroad,
I am quite confident that if I was a suitable distance from all this (like, abroad) and able to convince myself that I was in full possession of all the ‘facts’ (ie. believed what I’d been told) then I too would (possibly)
be able to feel fine about the project, but as it is, many of your fellow (on) islanders, who are soon to be living all this, don’t feel quite so assured, and need some proper answers.

@ forestflo
My response was for Kevin, but your’s got moderated before mine did so it got out of sync.
If you read what I wrote against Kevin’s post you will see (and all of my historic posts of which there have been many) that I am vehemently against the Airport project, so on this front we ageee.

kevin.
‘Some’ of the work at the airport is essential. However, I do not believe that the extent to which the project is going is ‘essential’. As has been previously pointed out, we have not sought the ‘minimum’ recommendations that we could implement…….. we are just going for the maximum. Not a sensible approach for a small island with limited land space and limited funds.
Guern abroad. My most humble apologies, the words ‘airport project’ makes my hair stand on end in a most militant manner currently ! xx

Isn’t Peter, right as he may be, playing a bit of politics here? Shouldn’t he be presenting his concerns to his political masters rather than going public?
