Watson, ranked 107 in the world, broke her opponent’s serve six times.

But she needed four match points to end the resistance of Arvidsson, who is ranked 77.

Watson won 7-5, 6-3 in a match lasting an hour and 35 minutes.

The 19-year-old will play third seed and world number 40 Tamira Paszek in the last eight tomorrow.

Watson is also still in the doubles. she and partner Kathrin Woerle, of Germany, beat American pair Amanda Fink and Ashley Weinholt 6-4, 6-2 in the first round.
