‘Golf clubs must invest in course’

Thursday 22nd September 2011, 2:29PM BST.

President of the L'ancresse Commons Council George DomailleCHANGES needed to bring the L’Ancresse golf course up to modern standards will need ‘significant financial investment’ from the clubs, according to the Culture and Leisure Department.

Negotiations on a new lease for the site have started between the department and the Vale Commons Council, which manages the land.

The current agreement dates back to 1950 and was made under a law which gave the council certain administrative powers over the common. The original lease expired in 1996 but the States took up an option to renew it for a further 20 years and the current deal runs out in 2016.

Vale Commons Council president George Domaille (pictured) said health and safety concerns meant that new course layouts were one of the things being looked at in meetings about a new agreement.

Lets hope that one of the health and safety concerns is to get rid of the several cases where golfers have to bash their balls across 2 very busy roads. Unacceptable nowadays with the volume of traffic using those roads.
Totally agree with the clubs paying for any improvements too

    As soon as I saw the H & S phrase I laughed.
Here`s a quiz. Over the last 50 years how nany people have been killed/seriously injured on the course as oppossed to the same on the nearby roads.. On the course none I can remember. On the roads I can sadly recall many events.

Maybe now is the time to restore the ‘common’ to the ‘common’ people. For too long a large part of it has been ‘out of bounds’ to the majority of Guernsey people.

Maybe a change of use is due. The golfers have had their time with the land plus there are two other courses they can use. Lets give something else a try, and maybe even liven up the island a bit. No other “sport” is given the amount of land that golfers have. How about a big race track so we can hold some decent motorsport events. The middle bit could be left as a nature reserve.

Two other courses? I have played the pitch and putt at St Pierre Park, and the swamp at Vazon, neither are really up to scratch.

Perhaps the local residents would prefer the sound of reving engines and the smell of fuel rather than the occasional shout of ‘fore’? But the wildlife would certainly rather live with the golfers!

Scarpia, it’s not out of bounds, I ride my quad bike across the greens every Sunday evening.

Surely a large golf course is really a luxury the island can do without given the shortage of land with any amenity value and the shortage of wild – as opposed to manicured suburbanised – open countryside.

Seven previous posts and not one calling for the airport to be moved down there!

I don’t mind the land being a golf course, however I disagree with the elitism of the current golf clubs. As it is States land the golf course should be available for all to use. Also hopefully the rent will be a fair market value rather than the freebie it currently appears to be.

Of course they must be allowed to play golf…
However what is required is a committee of local people, to decide on ¨..
    A) An all peoples right to use OUR common
    B) a fixed rate of payment by users.
    C) all monies to be used to keep the course in good order.

    D) ABOVE ALL:; ANY PLAYER SHOUTING AT PEOPLE AS THEY WAK ON OUR COMMON GROUND.
Then that player should have a hefty fine and banned for a year.
Any further nonsense… then banned for life.

The inhabitants living near the common should be part of the the ruling committee.

However the mention of a new airport isn’t so daft as it might sound:
Mind you if it did (does) happen. then goodbye Pembroke beach L’ancresse beach, Chouet all Martello towers. sandy Hook oh just about all we love from the North.
