Funding of colleges report puts 11-plus in spotlight, says deputy

Barry BrehautA PROPOSAL to cut public funding for the colleges has reignited the 11-plus debate, according to one States member.

Deputy Barry Brehaut (pictured) said the proposals, which will be discussed in the Assembly this week, have inevitably led to questions being raised about Guernsey’s education system.

‘The report points out that this is not about the 11-plus, it is about funding. Of course it is all about the 11-plus ultimately because it is about special place holders,’ he said, speaking on BBC Guernsey’s Sunday phone-in.

The Policy Council has put forward proposals to cut funding to Ladies’, Elizabeth and Blanchelande Colleges by nearly a quarter over seven years as part of an effort to reduce public spending.

Of course it has – you can’t look at these things in isolation.

Any radical changes to education policy need to be looked at holistically.

    Paul le page,

you know I don’t like to cross swords with you Paul but….

As I’ve stated on earlier posts even if the funding proposals go through (I don’t think they will) the increase in fees would be £5.45p per student per week hardly radical. So I see no reason why.

    a. scholarships should be affected.

    b. why the 11+ needs to be included in the debate.

Fees go up a little, see above, scholarships stay, 11+stays. What’s the problem?

I suppose “the problem” is, Kevin, that if there were no 11+ there would be no special place holders nor any need to fund them in a different way from every other school pupil. I don’t see how you can discuss public funding of one or three schools in isolation from the public funding of all the other schools.
