Guernsey’s will to win
Monday 26th September 2011, 2:30PM BST.
IT’S hard not to be smug this week after an amazing weekend of Guernsey sporting achievement. So, credit where it’s due, we’re all allowed a few days of celebration.
Everyone knows that Guernsey is a sports-mad island, just a glance through our sports pages or a wander around the abundance of clubs, groups and activities the Bailiwick has to offer is testament to that.
Whether it’s elite individual achievement – from Andy Priaulx and Heather Watson, to Dale Garland and Lee Merrien – or team performances on the national and international stage that leave rivals in our wake, the sheer level of competitiveness, sportsmanship and, ultimately, triumph never ceases to amaze.
All too easily then, complacency can set in, which is why it is important to recognise the accomplishments of Guernsey’s cricket team this weekend.
Not content on Friday in Kuala Lumpur with gaining promotion to the Pepsi World Cricket League Division Five and booking a tournament place in Singapore in February, it seems Guernsey’s cricket team still hadn’t finished.
Far from resting on their laurels, on Saturday they went on to win the ICC World Cricket League Division Six final and deliver what is being described as one of the greatest wins in the history of the island game.
As the report in today’s Guernsey Press reveals, the victory over hosts Malaysia wasn’t an easy one, with even the most diehard of Guernsey fans resigned to a defeat and happy to settle for promotion. All of which made their incredible comeback victory even sweeter.
And at home, Guernsey was also making headlines over at Footes Lane where the Green Lions were doing the island proud and beating UK opposition in a 9-0 mismatch that had a sell-out Garenne Stand on its feet and applauding.
Yet even at 8-nil Guernsey FC had been chasing down every ball, still trying to score, still trying to improve.
Both events were ‘I was there’ moments: great for fans and sporting acheivements that make it impossible not to feel proud at the dogged Guernsey will to win.
What makes that resolve so strong is harder to analyse and everyone will have a theory.
But it’s definitely there and getting stronger. And long may it continue.
