Guernsey’s streets ‘are safe’
Wednesday 28th September 2011, 2:44PM BST.
GUERNSEY’S streets are safe in comparison to any other similar jurisdiction, Home minister Geoff Mahy told the States this morning.
He faced questions by Deputy David De Lisle over policing in the streets of St Peter Port.
Deputy De lisle wanted a zero tolerance in Guernsey to restore confidence.
Deputy Mahy (pictured) said the strategic direction from the department was totally along those lines.

I can’t say I know many people who would fancy walking through town on a Friday/Saturday night on their own.
Although it is much safer over here than parts of UK, I personally feel less safe now than 5-6 years ago.

Jeff, totally agree, Guernsey used to be one on its own, you could walk in Guernsey anytime day or night, catching up with the UK big time, the drug problem seems to be getting out of hand,also the unemployment and benefits system, so in that case catching up with the UK big time, why, I ask myself, is an Island so smal being allowed to have this situation, Policing and Border Agency fault perhaps !!!!! Definately without prejudice, but what happened to all the local people.

Come off it Jeff.Even young mothers with babes in buggies walk around Town late at night.How dangerous can it be?

I am a Guernsey person now studying for my degree in the UK. I see more fights on the average night out in Guernsey than I do in the mainland. Comparatively after dark I feel much safer as a young woman in the UK than back home.

The streets might be fairly safe but the organised crime is on the up.

@Rachel
So true, we visit UK regulary and feel far safer out and about than in Guernsey at night.

You have to compare like for like….the UK is a massive country with slightly bigger problems that Guernsey. Guernsey has the population of an average town… according to population size seems more realistic to me. The idea that Guernsey is crime free is not true, but it is just as ridiculous to say that it is a dangerous place. I have to agree with the comments regarding Town on a Saturday….might not be unsafe, but the behaviour displayed by drunken louts does not make it a nice place to have a stroll. A quick read of the paper clearly shows one that a lot of criminal activity here is fuelled by alcohol….there appears to be a acceptance of drunken behaviour that I have not encountered elsewhere in Europe. I have never seen young French, Italian, Spanish, Greek or Dutch kids behave this way…but here and in the UK it seems par for the course.
