States reject college means testing
Wednesday 28th September 2011, 4:31PM BST.
AN AMENDMENT that would have led to a radical change in the way three colleges are funded was rejected this afternoon.
Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher (pictured) wanted a model that would mean all parents wanting to send their children to Elizabeth College, Ladies College or Blanchelande were means tested and paid towards their education on a graded amount, from nothing to £6,000.
It was one of the options rejected by the Policy Council – it would have saved an estimated £1m. a year by 2018.
The amendment lost by 40 votes to five.
The States has now gone into general debate on how to cut the States support of the colleges.

Thank goodness. It would be rather ironic for Guernsey to embrace such a socialist idea. “Means testing” can also lead to perverse results.

If someone pays there taxes who are the states to say they shouldn’t get equal to their child. Would have punished those paying the most tax…ridiculous!
