Education minister backs La Mare head to improve
Friday 30th September 2011, 2:31PM BST.

UNDER-fire Education minister Carol Steere yesterday insisted she had complete confidence in her board and in the head teacher at La Mare de Carteret High.
The department was forced on Wednesday to reveal that provisionally just 12% of the schools’ pupils this year achieved a GCSE pass rate of five grades AA to C, including maths and English.
A school in England is regarded as failing if it does not hit 35%. Elizabeth College had a 98% pass rate and Ladies’ College 100%.
‘We are talking about one indicator, one set of results. Measures are already being taken, let’s look at the service as a whole and the island-wide trend over the last 10 years.
‘Let’s not get hysterical.’

“Let’s not get histerical”. Is Deputy Steere referring to her close friends,or is her comment being directed to the more intelligent members of the population? Those possessing ‘common sense’ will already know the answer.

Rep Steere
How rude and arrogant of you to suggest that the concerned parents, voters and, children for that matter, are becoming ‘hysterical’.
We are not talking about one result, we are talking about yours and your committee’s credibility; coupled with yours and their expertise to run Education.
Your CM does not have confidence in you, or your committee.
Have you put any positive pointers/measures in place, such as arranging an open meeting for the parents/teachers and students at LMDC and StS ??
I am extremely disappointed in one of your committee members, Rep Fallaise; he is all for transparency of Government on one level, yet felt morally able to maintain a silence on this most vital issue. I for one had high hopes of this young Rep, now I can see that he is not quite as credible as I had hoped.

Got it all covered, good post. Particularly Rep Fallaize who has been conspicous in his absence on here particulalry as he makes up 1 of the board.
Does Steere even buy into the rubbish that she has been spouting in the last couple of days?
You’d have to incredibly naive to buy into anything she’s saying now.

Should not the headlines parents were looking for be 88% pass and 12% fail.
Shame on you people in the positions you hold not to have done your best for these children. May I add that if it is your best then stand down and let the job go to someone who can show results better then you have.
Is it not good results that gets you to keep your job(sorry am I missing something here)
When all is said and done its the children that pay the price(and they are what counts in all of this)

How’s this for another great lesson plan at LMDC?
Yesterday, my child’s RE teacher was, according to my child ” a little poorly”. “Oh dear” I said, “What did you all do then?” “Watched Wallace and Grommit”.
They actually watched a DVD amidst this storm over poor teaching standards and appalling results. What on earth is happening here?
Carol Steere should have stuck to singing pseudo-punk at La Trelade in the good old days. Her credibility is now completely shot, and as for her other cronies – go now for heaven’s sake.

Your two reporters tell the Guernsey readership that,
A school in England is regarded as failing if it does not hit 35%. Elizabeth College had a 98% pass rate and Ladies’ College 100%.
End
Really sorry to be a pain but these figures were probably offered by the Guernsey education department who have their backs against a very hard wall.
The figures are contradicted by researchers in Jersey and published in an article written by the editors of the JEP.
The figure for failing is 53.1% not the 35% as published in Guernsey which is even more damming for Guernseys’ education authority.
Jerseys’two worse performing schools would have been closed in the UK according to the article in second link offered below.
A second request under Jerseys FOI law has gone into Jerseys very expensive education Dept. Asking how many none – front line teaching staff are employed, and at what cost. So far after over three months no answer has been forthcoming.
JEP
A major benchmark against which performance can be judged is the percentage of students who achieve at least five GCSEs, which must include English and maths, at grades between A* and C. The UK national average is 53.1 per cent.
The figures for our intermediate schools are 38.2 for Les Quennevais, 28.4 for Le Rocquier, 19.7 for Haute Vallée and 18.3 for Grainville.

IT is nonsense for Deputy James Reed to claim that publishing GCSE results could damage school performance. The exam results are the school’s performance.

Hysteria – an exaggerated emotional state especially by a large number of people. Seems an appropriate description of how people are feeling.

@Mr Lloyd
I suspect that Rep Fallaise has been muzzled, together with the rest of this ‘uneducated in real terms’committee, hence the deafening silence; he generally rivals Rep Jones with his ultra long diatribes.
It is interesting to note that not one sitting Rep has openly commented on any of the threads concerning this fiasco, none have offered public support, either – could this be that April elections are looming in their minds?

I have just heard that tomorrow is a teachers’ training day at La Mare de Carteray(!)- not before time some may say.
Surely the children need a pupils’ training day. They will be spending the day on the beach.

It would appear to most people that these so called people like Steere: couldn’t run a dolls house.
They believe they are the almighty and people would have be like that Play.

Yawn… is Steere still bleating on? What a bore that woman is becoming. Why can’t she just admit defeat for goodness sake?
