Playing at No. 1 in his side’s home match against newcomers University of Birmingham, the Guernseyman came from a game down to beat Chris Ryder 6-11, 15-13, 11-2, 11-6.

At No. 37, Ryder is 14 places above Simpson (pictured) in the world rankings.

Nottingham won the overall match 4-1 to top group A after the first round of matches.
