Survey ‘shows need’ for mental health strategy

A HEALTH and Social Services mental health survey has helped to raise awareness and encourage the next steps in introducing a mental health strategy, according to Guernsey Mind’s senior advocacy liaison officer.
Emily Litten (pictured) was impressed by the work carried out by the department and said that a survey was needed in the island.
‘They have done a fantastic job because it was so important to get a baseline in mental wellbeing for the island so we can now keep track and record numbers and statistics, for example.
‘We will have different results to other places because we are Guernsey – I don’t think we can compare [to elsewhere] and what I tend to find is that people who do have problems are more noticeable in the island than other places because of our communities,’ she said.

Do we really need yet another survey?
Statistics prove that Guerney is an ideal place to hold one, because people with mental and physical health issues do not tend to migrate; this affords base knowledge, ability to track, etc.
Why not just get together some of the mental health professionals and nursing staff, previous and current; they will give the answers.
