St Sampson’s High is 50 over its 720 capacity
Monday 24th October 2011, 2:30PM BST.
ST SAMPSON’S High School is 50 pupils over its capacity just two years after it opened.
And the department has admitted that catchment areas might be adjusted after it carries out a review of the space needed at the proposed redevelopment of La Mare de Carteret.
St Sampson’s High, one of two schools at the heart of the falling GCSE results row, was designed to cater for 720 pupils.
Education has confirmed that there are currently 770 students attending.
‘The school was designed on the basis of six forms of entry over five year groups with an average class size of 24 so the current pupil numbers mean that average class sizes will have increased by one or two pupils to 25 or 26 – still well-below the Education Department’s stated maximum of 30,’ a spokesman said.

Good evening,
Simple solution, lets save some time, (& tax payers money!), why not just ship some of the more, ‘slightly more challenged delinquents’ next door? Home from home – everyones a winner!
Cheers

Just a reflection that the island is overpopulated

Actually it’s 130 UNDER capacity – what GP mean is it’s 50 over IDEAL capacity.

Good Afternoon Le Viaer / G4d,
I agree entirely. Ideal capacity now accounts for less than precisely 50% of our over capacity in schooling within the bailiwick. At a primary level that means effectively only 30% of GP has been show to reduce the remaining 6% of inner GP, which gives rise to the current situation of inflated GP – while only at base. Essentially take something that is 100% full, now reduce it by a mere 20% and what are you left with? 80%. 80% minus GP at a ratio of 1:7 creates, in this case, the perfect storm!
Also, do you realise that the word ‘capacity’ is actually derived from the term to ‘cap-a-cit’ which is latin in origin.
Cheers
Godfrey

@ Major Godfrey,
If you mean ship them next door to Le Murier, they’re full and doing a very good job. If you mean ship them next door to the Prison, that’s full as well, they even keep visitors in overnight if you aren’t careful. If you mean ship them next door to the stables and riding school, I understand they have places free on a Wednesday.

I don’t see why they have to make a big thing about st sampsons high school being 50 pupils over. It’s not really that big of a deal! I mean guernsey is being over populated all the time but lately everything has been “st sampsons high school…” in the headlines I do respect all your opinions but they don’t do this to other high schools do they?
