ISLANDERS have reacted angrily to proposals that could see Church Square closed to cars.
The idea is one of the options in the road transport strategy report and has the backing of Environment.
But Josephine Campling, 62, who was using a temporary disabled sticker in order to park to pick up a prescription, was outraged at the suggestion. She often uses half-hour parking spaces.
‘How are they going to get coffins to the church or brides to their wedding?’ she demanded.
Taxi driver Peter Kenney was worried about the impact such a move could have on his profession and the square’s rank.

Perhaps the better suggestion would be to ban all vehicles except taxis going to the rank, delivery vans (specific times) and disabled drivers with the current parking reserved for them.
There looks to only be 10-12 spaces at most and some of those are delivery only.

Jay is spot on.
Clear out the lazies and leave it to the people who need access.
It will make it much more pleasant to walk through.

Totally agree Jay. No able bodied driver should be allowed to park there, what’s stopping them catching the bus or parking elsewhere and actually exercising their legs!
Naturally there should be dispensations for Town Church arrivals/departures.
Taxi Rank should stay, maybe a mini bus route with stop in square too
As ever private vehicle owners hope they rule the roost. Cluck Cluck

I agree, the spaces should be reserved for the disabled and for the other vehicles that you mentioned (taxis, deliveries and church use).
There are only about 4 spaces that are actually for the general public and it cloggs up the traffic going around there when people fight to get in a space for half an hour cos they are too lazy to walk from the pier or bus station (which is not that much further!)
It would also hopefully limit the number of people who fly round the corner, narrowly missing pedestrians as they slam on their brakes then puff smoke into the atmosphere waiting for a space! By which time they could have parked somewhere else and walked!!
