Hansard idea wins approval

KEEPING a full written record of States debates in the form of a Hansard has won the backing of members.
The States Assembly and Constitution Committee proposed keeping a Hansard using a voice recognition system, which it claims will cost £20,000 a year.
A full business case now needs to be approved by the Treasury and Resources Department before a Hansard is produced.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
That would be great.
I assume the public would be able to view these on a continously updated website?

And of course a 20k voice recognition system is really going to handle something like -
“…Ms Le Poidevin of Pleinheaume and Mr Duquemin of the Rue Du Dos D’Ane…” *
- without expensive human proofreading / copy checking.
(* Similarities with actual people are coincidence only!)

And the original audio files should also be published online in case of errors in the speech recognition.

About time,
We are about the only jurisdiction left that doesn’t have a hansard type of system that allows public access. At present it costs £30 to get an audio CD of a States meeting from the Greffe. That hardly encourages scrutiny of States meetings.
Will,
We are apparently going to be using the proven system in the Isle of Man. The £20,000 is what it is estimated it will cost us for the Isle of Man to produce the Hansard each year. I believe SACC have already carried out tests which were obviously satisfactory.
Janie C,
I quite agree, audio should also be up on the internet so as anyone can listen to a States debate at any time.

I hope that this system is brought in very soon as many of the current deputies will miss their few minutes of fame if it doesn’t come in until after April 2012
