PROPOSALS to remove abandoned cars from the Salerie Battery have delighted people living nearby.

The north-western area of the area’s car park has struggled with abandoned vehicles over the past few years, but the police have been powerless to stop them because the area was not a disc park.

Now an Environment Department proposal has suggested turning the area into two- and 10-hour spaces, leaving an area for fishermen.

Deputy Barry Brehaut has placed an amendment seeking to have bike parking instead of cars.

I’m with Barry on this one. The blankets of cars monopolising our sea front are big too big now. Give us more space!

I first complained about the abandonned vehicles at The Salerie Battery over 18 months ago and had an on site meeting with a young man from The Environment Dept. The same vehicles are still there.

At last something has been done to clear the trash but I wonder how long it will be before it actually happens. There are rules of engagement between the dept. and the owners but I`ll bet that it will be at least 6 months before you will see a cleared car park.

One thing that disappoints me is that it will still be used as a parking area be it only for bicycles and motorbikes. This was a perfect opportunity to claim back an area of historic influence and restore it to its original structure even down to mounting a few false cannon. It would have given everyone a place to go and admire the eastern coast and the other Islands, shipping and small boats.
access could have been allowed for the fishermen to pick up their catches with permits(proof of mooring fees paid for the small harbour). This would give viewers something else to watch and perhaps trade for fresh fish.

Why must any spare space be given over to parking? If extra bike parking is needed to disuade car usage then take away car parking near the top of the Marina slipway and replace that with bike parking.

The cobbled area (not many of those left) could have been relaid flat and safe to walk on and a few planters would enhance the area to a restfull niche even though the mani road is only yards away.
I hope the Environment Dept. don`t waste this opportunity.

Just one more point. I hope the Environment Dept. are planning some sort of planting scheme for the Mesh cliff pinning scheme that is going to scar the Bathing Pools area. Think on it environment.

This is a lovely area .too much space is being taken over for the cars . it is a super little space to do something with.
The heritage is worthy of something other than cars.
They will also get a bashing from the sea here on a bad day
I hope the environment will make good use of this space to make sure people can get past bloney cars to see the beautiful views from here .
Many might have prams or even be in a wheelchair . So extra space is needed.
Yes get rid of dumped cars . but it is about time the law was change to give the police the power to remove them and crush them instead of faffing around with the different departments .
Remove all dumped ones off the island then we might have plenty of room for those who get used to park.
A little placard with the history of this area would also be good down there .
Lets make the most of what our forefather left us .and educated our children s, children on it all.

If anyone is interested in claiming back car parks from dumpers then my next target is the car park by the Vale Castle as it seems to be getting took over by commercial vehicles being left there for weeks on end.

Write or phone The Evironment Department and make your voice heard. It seems to have worked with the Salerie Battery so lets claim back the other areas that are being spoilt by illegal parking.
